GILT – Trailer For A Movie That Doesn’t Exist

GILT by Amanda Moss

Today, Florida-based band GILT deliver their latest single, “Trailer For A Movie That Doesn’t Exist” from their upcoming album I Saw Myself In The Black Screen out June 26th through Smartpunk Records.

The track is an absolute whirlwind of the band’s self-branded “Nu Emocore” combining bright vocals and jarring screams, unique chord progressions and crushing breakdowns. Guest vocals from Nico of slowcore band i.liedtomyself add an ethereal dimension to the single, pairing with Asha Locke’s dynamic approach. The video for the track captures a compelling performance from the band and Nico, and was shot and edited by GILT’s Tyler Fieldhouse.

“‘Trailer For A Movie That Doesn’t Exist’ is a narrative follow-up to ‘What Color Is The Light When It’s Turned Off?’ (from 2020’s Ignore What’s Missing), a song about someone dissociated from their body wondering what’s on the other side. Starting with early Linkin Park influenced digital drums and some of the album’s softest vocals, each chorus of Trailer gets harsher as our now-dead narrator haunts the family home and seethes about a life spent fulfilling empty rituals, stuck watching a family who never truly knew them struggle to plan a funeral or grieve appropriately. The clip before the double breakdown is from the movie ‘Unbreakable’, a moment where Bruce Willis’ son has to come to terms with not being the invincible man his father is. It’s extremely messy, just like family, just like death.”

I Saw Myself In The Black Screen

GILT is a fever dream blending poetry and introspection with mindless violence against themselves and the world around them. With their new album I Saw Myself In The Black Screen the band delivers the most true version of their sound to date, processing media escapism through the eyes of a traumatized child struggling with a choice between self-destruction and righteous revenge. I Saw Myself In The Black Screen is the soundtrack to a mental breakdown. The tracks flip like channels between hooky riffs, grating screams, anthemic choruses, and walls of sound – polished and punishing all at once. The album was recorded by Lee Dyess at Earth Sound Studios and produced and mixed by Hansel Romero (Nightlife).

I Saw Myself In The Black Screen is available for preorder now through Smartpunk Records.

GILT is Asha Locke – vocals, Tyler Fieldhouse – vocals/rhythm guitar, Ali Reed – drums, Cameron Subic – lead guitar, and Woody – bass. Recorded bass on album by Tyler Peterson.
