Empty Banner – Dead To Me

Empty Banner by Meg Morris

Hull-based feisty female indie band Empty Banner share their upbeat debut single “Dead To Me” – a fan-favourite at their gigs about one of the band members’ ‘birth father’ & his absence from their life.

Released via Hull’s renowned record label cum youth centre Warren Records, this infectious indie-pop banger was recorded at The Warren’s recently revamped inhouse studios along with local indie producer Adam Pattrick at the helm. The song encapsulates the confusion & mixed emotions felt towards the absent figure – & in particularly the strong feelings of anger, as portrayed in the shouted lyric on the end chorus “You look just like me … You are nothing like me”.

The band explain: “for us, this song is for all the bad men in the world who shirk their responsibilities & feel they can get away with it without consequence. As for the record itself, it’s taken a while for us to get it together, having played it live at our gigs in many guises, but now it’s out there, we hope people are going to love it as much as we do. There’s a video for Dead To Me too, which was made by The Warren Youth Project in collaboration with Unthinkable Film Festival, which aims to give young people a chance to be a part of the whole production experience, from creating initial ideas to the final post-production spit & polish – thanks guys!”

Influenced by Radiohead, Paramore, Nothing But Thieves & Muse, Empty Banner comprises Mia Ann Stephens (Vocals), Maisie Foster (Lead & Rhythm Guitar), Cora Bligh (Bass & Backing Vocals) & Roisin Miller (drums). The band started off with Mia & Maisie attending a music group run by East Riding Music Services called Erock. Soon Roisin joined as the drummer & after struggling to find a female bassist for a while, a post went out on Instagram which drew the attention of Cora – and so the lineup was complete.

This distinctive upcoming band have great energy & charisma on & off stage, having already built a great rapport with their audiences in Hull & the surrounding area. Describing themselves as “not just a girl band”, Empty Banner make alternative music, experimenting with different styles & sounds, for not just their own songs but also for their unique cover versions which attract much attention both on-line & at their gigs.

On the live front, they’ve performed at East Yorkshire events like Humber Street Sesh & Brid Spa, as well as supporting various visiting bands to Hull’s renowned Polar Bear venue. Oh yes, Empty Banner are full of life & raring to go… be sure to follow on socials.
