Ella Red x VOILÀ – Muse
Texas-based alt-pop singer-songwriter Ella Red joins forces with VOILÀ on “Muse,” a new single out now via Nettwerk Music Group.
A moody exploration of fixation and envy, the song draws on a girl Ella has only ever encountered online, whose carefully curated image sparks a jealousy she can’t shake.
“There’s this girl I can’t stop thinking about — she has no idea who I am, but I see her online and I can’t help but feel this raging jealousy,” Ella explains. “I’d go to sleep thinking about her, and it became enough to where I wanted to write about her — my muse.”
The collaboration is years in the making. After seeing VOILA perform in Dallas a couple of years ago, Ella decided she would work with the duo one day. “I sent them a message saying, ‘I’d love to work with you now, or in a year when I’m twice as big!’ And that’s exactly what happened,” she says. When Ella shared “Muse,” a song inspired by her fixation on another girl, VOILA connected with it enough to turn it into a full collaboration. Now, the artists are taking that partnership on the road, with Ella joining VOILA as direct support on their upcoming tour, kicking off next week in Los Angeles and continuing through cities including Nashville, New York, and Chicago.
An overachieving teenage cellist turned alt-pop songwriter, Ella has built her music around the subjects that don’t always make their way into conventional pop. “I hear so many artists doing breakup songs and love songs, and I’m like, ‘But do you ever think about mortality? Do you ever think about death?’” she says. That instinct for exploring the darker, more complicated corners of human experience runs through “Muse,” which follows her viral breakout “I Like You Best,” now surpassing 33 million Spotify streams and 50 million views across social platforms.
Ella has brought that same emotional range to the stage, headlining tours of her own and supporting LØLØ, ELLISE, and Cloudy June, in addition to performing at Lollapalooza. On the upcoming run, she’ll share the stage with VOILA, bringing a collaboration that began with a promise full circle.
