Sycco – I’ve Loved And I’ve Lost
Following her surprise carpark set at BigSound last night, Melbourne-based singer, writer and producer Sycco* (Sash McLeod) returns today with “I’ve Loved and I’ve Lost,” the second single from her forthcoming album Look Up, out 2 October via Future Classic.
Channelling big Phil Collins energy, “I’ve Loved and I’ve Lost” speaks to the vulnerability of love’s first rush, putting Sycco’s irresistible melodies front and centre as her melancholic vocal soars over Chrome Sparks and Oscar Sharah’s restrained, classy production to emotionally resonant effect.
The single follows the release of title track “Look Up”, which was added to rotation at triple j and FBi immediately on release and is set to feature in EA SPORTS FC 27, out later this month. McLeod also recently picked up a co-writing credit on the My Brilliant Career soundtrack, contributing to Jess Hitchcock’s track “Burn It Down.”
Look Up follows Sycco’s critically acclaimed, ARIA-nominated, J Award-winning debut Zorb, made with collaborators including Flume, Chrome Sparks, Mallrat and Stylaz Fuego, has amassed more than 80 million career streams. Over her short career, Sycco has placed twice in triple j’s Hottest 100 was championed by Spotify (RADAR, EQUAL, GLOW), Apple Music (Up Next) and Amazon Music (Breakthrough). She has supported Tame Impala, Remi Wolf and Glass Animals on national tours, and scored international radio support from BBC Radio 1, KCRW, KEXP and SiriusXM.
Look Up was largely recorded on a farm on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula with co-producer Oscar Sharah, with additional input from LA producer and longterm collaborator Chrome Sparks. Together they built the record’s sonic world from the ground up: drums made from scratch on a synth, layers of pitched vocals set against McLeod’s crystalline lead. Where Zorb captured the colourful chaos of Sycco’s first sharehouse, Look Up is more intimate and unguarded, retaining the psychedelic flair of her debut while stripping it back, raw and transparent.
