Ger Carriere – When We Were On Mars
Ger Carriere has dropped “When We Were On Mars,” her newest single in the coming EP, with each release offering an opportunity to showcase another side of her as an artist.
Gentle, sultry, and very confident, the song replaces the rougher tones of some of Ger’s previous music with a softer approach without compromising her poise and presence. The song features airy vocals and space production with an 80s influence in a way that makes it seem very nostalgic and Ger’s own.
There is a conscious lightness about the song. Plenty of space is given for Ger’s vocals, while subtle instrumentation and whispering backgrounds manage to convey a sense of intimacy while not overpowering the song. There is a definite presence of pop and R&B, especially in terms of the sensual feel of the instrumentation, which harkens back to a time when musicians like Prince knew that sensuality could be sophisticated, playful, and utterly self-assured.
It has almost a lunar glow about it. “When We Were On Mars” brings up imagery of an open window of a bedroom at night, a sheer curtain floating with the night breeze, as the night air flows into the room. The pallid blue color of its atmosphere gives it an almost ethereal quality, and yet Ger’s voice floats above all with a lightness that never gets hurried. This is desire, but no despair. This song has the liberation of knowing one’s own self well enough to desire without justification.
“When We Were On Mars” arrives amid a steady rise for Carriere. Her earlier single “Can I Be Her” earns a Real People Playoffs win, achieves a five week run on MBC, secures a spot in the MBC Hall of Fame, holds a seven week run at #1 on the Sask INDG Countdown, and reaches #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, which airs on SiriusXM. The following single, “Are You My Type,” continues that momentum, reaching #4 on the Saskatchewan Indigenous Top 5 Countdown, while “Honeybees” reaches #5 on the Indigenous Music Countdown and spends two weeks in the Real People Playoffs.
With “When We Were On Mars,” Ger adds another layer to her maturation process. It’s not as forceful as some of her previous work, but it’s far from inactive, employing mood, control, and sexiness to craft its own brand of power. As yet another track on her upcoming EP becomes available, Ger further cements herself as an artist worth seeking out before others catch on, especially those that like women who can be both vulnerable and powerful.
