Paper Lady – Cellsword
Paper Lady returns with its new single “Cellsword,” bringing the Brooklyn indie dream-rock band back with a heavy, atmospheric track shaped by personal transition and emotional conflict.
Written during a period of intense change, “Cellsword” explores manipulation, surrender and the ways people can become trapped by their own choices. Its title transforms “sellsword”, a mercenary or hired gun, into the image of someone willingly returning to a self-created prison by abandoning independence and choosing familiarity over freedom.
Drawing from the dissonant textures of Autolux and Sonic Youth, the track pairs jagged guitar work with a dense atmosphere as its lyrics move between rebellion and submission, power and vulnerability and fear disguised as acceptance.
“This song came from watching someone surrender pieces of themselves while believing they were finding a way forward,” said vocalist and songwriter Alli Raina. “It lives in that contradiction between rebellion and submission, power and vulnerability and the way fear can start to look like acceptance. Musically, we wanted it to feel heavy, jagged and uneasy, like that conflict is happening in real time.”
Paper Lady will celebrate “Cellsword” Aug. 28 at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, followed by a Boston release show Sept. 4 at DIY venue Tourist Trap. The band will also perform Sept. 21 at Goldsounds with Cherry Pick and Nov. 21 at Cafe 939 in Boston supporting Francis of Delirium. Paper Lady’s Audiotree session will be released Sept. 25.
Paper Lady is the immortal crone, casting spells and wreaking havoc in Brooklyn, NY. Formed in the depths of the Northeast DIY scene, the indie dream-rock quartet consists of Alli Raina, Rowan Martin, Alex Castile and Taylor Morris. Originally based in Boston, the band uses strong sonic dynamics, guitar pedals galore and visceral emotion to create its distinctive sound.
Paper Lady released its debut album, Idle Fate, in May 2025, opening a portal into the band’s world of noise, magic and emotional intensity. The album received support from Spotify’s undercurrents, Fresh Finds Rock and Fresh Finds Indie playlists and was selected for Bandcamp’s Essential Releases.
