Deb Never – Moviestarr

Deb Never by Ashlan Grey

After kicking off her North American tour in LA last night, Deb Never shares her new single “Moviestarr”.

Deb debuted the mesmerizing new track, produced by Sora Lopez, Romil Hemnani and Matt Cohn last night to her home crowd, picking up where she left off following the release of her debut album ARCADE in May, which garnered praise from the likes of NYLON, NPR, Alternative Press, and HYPEBEAST. Most recently, Deb spoke with Cero Magazine about the path that led her to her debut studio album, which they described as “tender, reflective, raw, heartfelt, and delicate”.

Deb’s eight-stop North American tour continues tonight in San Francisco. From there, she’ll make her way to other cities across the U.S. and Canada, including Seattle, Chicago, Toronto, and New York City, where the run concludes on August 31st at Brooklyn’s Elsewhere. She’ll be joined by support from Mackeeper, Juliet Ivy and Hojean on select dates.

Deb’s songwriting voice is sharply defined on ARCADE, harnessing impromptu moments over the past few years to pour out her perspective into songs that she later pieced together into an album that unfolds in the arc of an intensely felt relationship. Deb takes chances with this debut, in love and in the vulnerability of stripping it all down to her and a guitar, writing and singing about personal discoveries and experiences. That vulnerability is paired with an unshakeable confidence and comfort in bearing it all, which she cuts with moments of levity, as Deb intersperses sly bits of her signature sense of humor.

Those vignettes informed by Deb’s own experiences were interwoven with the help of executive producer Romil Hemnani, who recorded the album with Deb in the middle of a bustling LA studio frequented by friends and collaborators like boylife, Dominic Fike, Kevin Abstract and others. Beginning with just Deb and her guitar, the songs unfurled organically, with orchestral swells and other instrumentation finding their way into the songs as Deb and Hemnani chiseled at her ideas. The album includes previously released singles “Not in Love”, “KNOW ME BETTER”, “ARCADE” and “all the time”, each arriving with visuals that speak to the larger world of ARCADE. In part with the balance of tenderness and sly fun she exudes on this album, Deb released an online arcade game to coincide with the album, and game night arcade takeovers to celebrate the album’s release in LA and New York City.
