Sophie Truax – Can’t Split A Worm
Seattle-born, self-taught multi-instrumentalist Sophie Truax unveils her new EP, ‘Can’t Split a Worm’, a six-track collection that expands the richly imagined world she has been steadily building through both her music and visual art. Blending warm, melodic alt-pop with emotionally candid songwriting, the project finds Truax embracing contradiction, vulnerability and self-acceptance with the same disarming honesty and whimsy that has become central to her work.
At its heart,’ Can’t Split a Worm’ explores the uncomfortable realities of being human: heartbreak, insecurity, self-doubt, and the quiet feeling of being either too much or not enough. Rather than searching for perfect resolutions, the EP leans into life’s dualities. The title itself is self-aware. We can’t have good without bad, pretty without ugly, a version of yourself you like without a version you don’t. You can’t split a worm. (contrary to popular belief, the worm just dies.)
That same philosophy runs through every aspect of Sophie’s creativity. From her songwriting to her handcrafted puppets, each part acts as a refreshing antidote to AI fatigue – a beating heart of handmade artistry standing in contrast to the rise of tools like ChatGPT and Suno to create pieces of art today.
Across six tracks, Truax pairs introspective lyricism with bright, expansive alt-pop production, creating songs that feel as comforting as they are emotionally revealing. The EP brings together previously released singles ’10 FEET TALL’, ‘SINK’ and ‘I’d Still Be’ with three new songs – ‘SELFISH’, ‘You Won’t’ and the intimate closing piece ‘jackshit (voice memo)’. Together, they form her most cohesive and personal body of work to date, one that captures the strange, contradictory emotions that often prove hardest to articulate.
Running parallel to her music is an equally distinctive visual practice. Beyond songwriting, Truax has cultivated a devoted audience through her handcrafted puppet creations, building an instantly recognisable universe that exists somewhere between Sesame Street, Adult Swim and the cinematic intimacy of A24. Each handmade character represents emotions and parts of herself that are often easier to explore through craft than conversation, with every puppet, costume and set piece deepening the narrative surrounding her songs. Working across music, sculpture, textiles and filmmaking, Truax has created a multidisciplinary project in which every element feels inseparable from the next.
Following the release of ‘Can’t Split a Worm’, Truax will take that world on the road for her biggest North American headline tour to date. Beginning in September, the run will see her perform across the United States and Canada, bringing her colourful visual universe to the stage for the first time and offering audiences a fully immersive live experience that extends far beyond the music itself.
