Angela Autumn – Believer

Angela Autumn by Avery Norman

Appalachian-born and Nashville-based musician Angela Autumn announces her second album, Believer, out 9/11 on Gar Hole Records.

Believer,

Nicknamed “The Rose of Appalachia,” a nod to the Allegheny roots and clawhammer banjo skills that helped her blossom into a critically-beloved solo artist, Autumn is fresh off of support tours with the likes of Bonny Light Horseman and Langhorne Slim, and after being awarded SXSW Developing Artist Grulke Prize, which in past years has gone to the likes of Leon Bridges, HAIM, Anderson .Paak and Future Islands. Now she prepares to release Believer – a musical melting pot of a record, blending the mountain music of Autumn’s past with the hybridized sounds — indie, psychedelia, pop, and gothic country — of her present. Written in the great outdoors (the woods of Tennessee, a rural treehouse in Asheville, at a friend’s warehouse in Chattanooga) and made with multi-instrumentalist and producer Baerd (Isaiah Beard), Believer showcases the other flowers in her garden, though, capturing Autumn in full bloom.

With the announcement of Believer, Angela Autumn shares the record’s lead single “Mountain Stream,” alongside a video featuring some of Angela and her band’s friends who identify as professional sex workers, pole dancers, and more.

“A lot of my friends are dancers, strippers, and body workers, and I like making music they can move their body to.” While the video celebrates the human body, the video pays tribute to Mother Nature with loping bass lines and glittering keyboards.

“The song ‘Mountain Stream’ is a slack-tuned anthem about escaping something,” Autumn explains. “It came to me one night when I was on a medicine journey and felt very otherworldly. I began singing words that did not feel like my own. But I think I was unearthing something deep inside of me. The mountain is a powerful image to me in my healing. It represents new heights and accomplishments, something monumental that is not easily perceived by the senses, but is felt internally. When making the video I wanted to show feminine power through dance. We collaborated with a few dancers and musicians and I made up some choreography. The song was entirely tracked live, minus the banjo and the loud primal hollers me and Isaiah added. I love that he had the faith in me to record it and it turned out to be the last song of six we tracked during our studio day. It had rained all day, so we really got to drop in and turn it up.”

Angela Autumn will be bringing the new songs of Believer on the road over the next few months, with a handful of U.S. festivals and a European/UK tour in support of Fink.
