Emei – What’s The Point

Continuing into the next act of what promises to be an unforgettable creative era, acclaimed Chinese-American alternative pop singer/songwriter Emei releases “What’s The Point” as the second offering from her forthcoming Night At The Opera EP.

The 5-track collection arrives June 12th under her newly minted deal with Atlantic Records in partnership with multi-GRAMMY® Award-winning mega-producer Ricky Reed’s Nice Life Recording Company.

Both “What’s The Point!” and “Night At The Opera” hint at the scope of Emei’s daring and diverse vision. She projects bold, bright, and blunt lyrics across a backdrop stitched together with organ, strings, and off-kilter beats. On “What’s The Point” (co-penned by Justin Tranter & produced by Ricky Reed), she defiantly declares “heartbreak is a part of life, cross my heart I hope it dies” over a fast-paced punchy instrumental, accentuated with her equally sharp and brisk vocal delivery.

“I’m usually a very cheery person, but after losing my grandma last year, it felt like this blanket of darkness fell on me and I couldn’t see a way out,” explains Emei. “When I walked into the studio with Ricky and Justin the day we wrote this song, I burst into tears 15 minutes in, in utter frustration and this is what we made. ‘What’s the Point!’ captured the anger I felt in my grief. I felt so unprepared for these feelings and so upset that nobody told me it would feel like this. I kept writing in my journal that I didn’t understand the point of getting close to anyone if I have to deal with the grief of losing them and not only did I lose her, but I lost a lot of important people in my life during this time period. This song is the crash out that followed a big year of a whole lot of loss.”

Emei celebrated the unveiling of Night At The Opera by announcing two intimate headline shows at New York’s The Slipper Room (June 10) and Los Angeles’ Troubadour (June 12). Following near-immediate sell outs, she followed with the announcement of her 18-date North American fall headline Night At The Opera Tour, kicking off September 30th in San Francisco.
