On Friday, Horsepower, the project of the New York-based songwriter Charlotte Weinman, will release her self-titled debut EP.

Today, she is sharing a final preview before the EP’s Friday release, a track called “Coins.”

Charlotte says of the track:

“This is the first song I wrote for the EP. I started writing it the night my partner of many years and I decided to break up. The version I wrote that night was like a million verses longer and the lyrics were completely raw and pathetic, which I say with love. They were open wounds. The only lyrics that remain from that first pass is the chorus. As I’ve gotten distance from the situation that begot the song, a lot of my sadness has been energized, and I’ve been more interested in exploring the anger. So we fanged this song, too. It’s been fun watching people connect to it when we play it live.”

Incorporating an eclectic scattering of influences ranging from Hole and Sleater Kinney to Lomelda, the EP feels like a sonic coalescence of Weinman’s most formative experiences. Her powerful vocals bespeak her background in performance, oscillating between girlish charm and nearly operatic intensity. On the production side, the EP owes much of its lush, crisp sound to the deft work of Charlotte’s brother Noah Weinman (Skullcrusher, Odie Leigh), and many production details and lead guitar lines came from her other brother Ben. The collaborative genesis of the EP is a testament to the siblings’ California upbringing in a house full of artists — both of her brothers are working musicians, and Charlotte’s older sister Emma painted the EP’s cover artwork.
