Elise Elvira – If Nobody Knows, Does It Count?

Elise Elvira If Nobody Knows Does It Count

Following a standout run of releases that have cemented her status as one of Sweden’s most compelling alternative pop artists, Elise Elvira unveils her debut album, ‘If Nobody Knows, Does It Count?’, via United Masters.

Moving fluidly between a range of stylistic elements, the new full-length project from the Stockholm artist is defined by a rich, multi-layered sonic palette and an instinct for blurring boundaries. Across the record, playful light-heartedness sits alongside darker undercurrents and introspective moments; punchy rhythms and vibrant pop production evolve beside hazy electronics, shadowy ballads and intimate acoustic arrangements, each track unfolding to reveal another unique side to Elise’s rich artistry.

The project begins with a grand opening statement in “Showbiz Baby”, that through distorted electronic layers and warped vocals emerges like a twisted take on a theatre show’s opening sequence – a nod to Elise’s performing arts background, before descending into a slightly surreal welcome from Elise: “it’s showbiz baby”.

Then arrives the funk-pop delivery of the album’s focus track, “If Nobody Knows, Does It Count?” – signalling the full arrival of the project – through a groove-driven bassline and punching drums, as Elise drifts between spoken word and softly sung verses before bursting into an anthemic chorus. The track is accompanied by an effortlessly cool, film-noir style music video, which see Elise grapple with a neverending battle of having to perform in social situations: “I don’t want to contribute, I don’t feel like oversharing my life with you” as she fights her way through a sea of strangers, until she finds her escape, to a type of performance more familiar to her, and a space in which she feels far more comfortable: on stage. A confident portrayal of a starlet unafraid to forge her own path, steadily gaining momentum as she moves into a new chapter, completely on her own terms.

“You Don’t Know Me” bursts into life with fast-paced drum sequences and glimmering synths, paired with effortlessly cool French passages that give the track a confident, assured personality. The sleek electronic production contrasts with Elise’s playful vocal delivery, creating another energetic shift within the project while showcasing her ability to move naturally between different sounds and influences.

At the heart of the project, previously released singles take centre stage; the indietinged “I’m Dead” and the dream-pop delivery of “I Need To Sleep” – which has amassed over 200K streams and counting. Together, the tracks highlight two different sides of Elise’s sound, from the more guitar-led and alternative feel of “I’m Dead” to the hazier, atmospheric world of “I Need To Sleep”.

Next is the spellbinding allure of “Postcard”, the final single to arrive before the full project’s release. Marking a clear shift in tone, the gentle piano, sweeping string arrangements and ethereal harmonies introduce a natural fragility, as Elise navigates the bittersweet uncertainty of staying connected to someone after a relationship has ended. The delicate arrangement leaves plenty of space for Elise’s vocals and the emotional weight to permeate through; before an unexpected drop offers a striking release. As futuristic synths and syncopated percussion introduce an almost alien quality to the track, “Postcard” shifts from a gothic piano ballad into something altogether more otherworldly, the contrasting blend of classical elements and modern, electronic layers showcasing Elise Elvira’s unique approach to music production.

The vulnerable, softer tones are continued through the intimate and understated “Good Enough”, built around soft acoustic guitar and an angelic vulnerability in Elise’s voice. As her vocals gently glide across the simple yet affecting arrangement, creating one of the project’s most stripped-back sections, it offers an intimate contrast to some of the album’s bolder moments and underscores the artist’s artistic versatility

Ending on “One Life To Give”, which collected over 81K streams, Elise rounds off the project with a confident and clear final statement. The track brings together pop sensibilities with the alternative edge that runs throughout the collection of work, leaving the project on an assured and recognisable note. As contrasting sounds, moods and textures are explored in “If Nobody Knows, Does it Count?” Elise creates a fully realised collection firmly establishing her distinctive place as a strikingly unique voice within the alternative pop landscape across Europe and the UK.

Elise Elvira’s creative career began in the realms of musical theatre and opera, before collecting a notable notch on her belt as songwriting coach for Dua Lipa’s Sunny Hill Foundation, guiding young artists to realise their own creative potential. This multifaceted experience feeds into the sound and visual output that she creates now, with a small, friend-heavy collective in the city – experiences mirrored in the array of influences apparent in “If Nobody Knows, Does it Count?”. From a coveted support slot for Eurovision winner Nemo last year, to growing support across Swedish radio and, most recently, a standout performance at Way Out West, Elise Elvira’s trajectory continues to gather pace, a striking pop talent steadily on the rise.

Now with the release of the full project, Elise Elvira firmly cements a milestone year and her position as one of alt-pop’s most intriguing new artists.
