Whisper Doll – Lucky Clover

Whisper Doll By Riley Natalova

Today, New York City’s Whisper Doll are thrilled to share their sophomore album Lucky Clover, available now via Take Care Records.

Across 10 ethereal tracks, bandleader Fiona Tagami’s dulcet vocals capture equal parts vulnerability and self-assured strength, propelled by gauzy guitars and infectious rhythms. The official music video for title track “Lucky Clover” arrives today, featuring its namesake, Fiona’s cat Lucky.

Reflecting on the song, Fiona says, “This song began when Maya sent me the little sparkly riff that comes in with the drums in the beginning. I wanted this song to feel hopeful and sparkly and sweet. The melody was written to sound similar to a children’s choir, innocent and sing-songy. I had just fallen in love with a sweet cat that lived at the bodega down the street from me. He was the perfect cat of my dreams. Grey and white and super fluffy. He would come to greet me every time I went there and would sit by the window and stare at me as I walked away. For my birthday, the bodega let me adopt him. It happened at a time when lots of things fell into place and I felt like the luckiest girl in the world. I named my new cat Lucky.”

Whisper Doll’s Lucky Clover was previewed across four singles, each with an official video. “Am I a Knife,” out in April, announced the band’s signing to Take Care Records, pairing twinkling synths with a driving bassline and a thunderous chorus where Fiona Tagami sings, “Oh, take me as I am, Oh, you know that you can,” a reflection on how the male gaze severs reality from feminine desire. “Bluebells” followed in early summer alongside the album announcement, a melodic pop song with upbeat riffs and a dreamlike, hopeful feel. Its video, inspired by Alice in Wonderland, was shot on Bard’s campus.

“So Sweet” arrived in August, with Fiona finding inner peace after returning to her childhood home over a delicate, otherworldly instrumental. Its video was co-directed by Fiona and Owen Lehman (Geese, MX LONELY, Lip Critic), who has directed every video of the Lucky Clover era, is set on an elementary school theater stage, where two distant lovers discover a shared reality.

“Sunsigns,” out in September, was the final tease of today’s release. Built on the whirlwind of a new crush, the band looks to the sun, moon, and stars for meaning, with glistening guitars beneath Fiona’s propulsive vocals. Fiona and Sage Leopold (Venetian Blinds) co-directed the video, which turns to tarot cards for answers.

Known for their captivating live performances, Whisper Doll has built a following within NY’s rock scene and toured across the U.S. and Japan. Throughout this year, the band previewed new material at New Colossus Festival, RockNite NY, and shows with Gift and Horse Jumper of Love. This month, Whisper Doll will celebrate Lucky Clover with an album release show at Baby’s All Right in Brooklyn, NY on October 9. Local favorites Buff Ginger and Cyanotype will open the show, with DJ sets from Starcleaner Reunion, Computerwife, and Shower Curtain.
