Grey DeLisle – There’s The Door
Today, singer-songwriter Grey DeLisle has released “There’s The Door,” the latest single from her forthcoming album, Don’t Turn Around, due October 23 via Hummin’bird Records.
A nod to George Jones’ classic “The Grand Tour,” the song revisits its portrait of a home haunted by a broken relationship from a woman’s perspective.
“There’s The Door” follows lead single “The Lights Are Off But Somebody’s Home,” a darkly funny, rockabilly-flavored take on the Bakersfield Sound that turns the classic country tale of a two-timing lover into a sharp-witted honky-tonk anthem. Together, the songs offer two sides of the heartbreak, humor, and classic-country storytelling that run throughout Don’t Turn Around.
“This is my nod to George Jones, ‘The Grand Tour’ bit from a female perspective,” says DeLisle.
On “There’s The Door,” DeLisle takes stock of a marriage through the objects left behind: an ashtray full of cigarettes, an empty easy chair, a porch swing filled with memories, the space where a family portrait once hung, and a wedding ring no longer worn. Each detail turns the house into a record of what has been lost, while pedal steel, strings, and backing vocals from Mandy Barnett deepen the song’s classic-country ache.
But DeLisle’s narrator isn’t simply mourning the man who no longer wants to be there. By the song’s final verse, waiting has given way to resolve: if he doesn’t love her, he knows where the door is, and she’ll find someone who does.
That resolve places “There’s The Door” squarely within the larger world of Don’t Turn Around. Across the album’s 11 songs, DeLisle explores the many ways people leave one another and what remains after they do: lovers drive away, doors close, and empty houses become haunted by memory. Yet even at its most heartbroken, the album is filled with warmth, wit, and resilience, pairing classic country storytelling with DeLisle’s unmistakable perspective.
Besides Barnett, “There’s The Door” features Deke Dickerson on Bass VI, Bernie Dresel on drums, Murry Hammond on bass, Jake Gideon on acoustic guitar, Greg Leisz on pedal steel, and Tammy Rogers on violins and violas.
Produced by the late Andy Paley and completed by longtime collaborator Marvin Etzioni following Paley’s passing, Don’t Turn Around brings together an extraordinary cast of musicians and draws from classic country, California roots music, and rockabilly traditions while remaining unmistakably DeLisle.
Though millions know DeLisle as the longtime voice of Daphne Blake in Scooby-Doo, Azula in Avatar: The Last Airbender, and characters across The Simpsons, SpongeBob SquarePants, and more, she is also a Grammy-winning recording artist and acclaimed singer-songwriter whose music draws deeply from the traditions of classic country and roots music. Don’t Turn Around is available on all platforms on October 23.
