Chenayder – Outdated
Today, Haitian-American alternative-soul artist Chenayder releases her debut album Outdated, via Alamo Records.
Earlier this week she dropped the music video for new track “The Beginning,” featuring Bay Area rapper detahjae.
Filmed on location in the desert near Cottonwood, Arizona, the video for “The Beginning” finds Chenayder and detahjae on a psychedelic road-to-nowhere as the world falls apart. Inspired by Beck’s iconic video for “Loser” and the ever-relevant movie Paris, Texas, the video is the ultimate hazy trip from the mind of its director, Flatspot and director of photography, Lawrence Martinez, that blends humor and optimism in equal parts.
“Both the song and video represent the hopeful feeling you have when starting something new in life,” she shares. “There’s anxiety and excitement at the same time and I just wanted my fans to feel the same way as they continue on this journey with me.”
“The Beginning” is a fitting track within the context of Chenayder’s current trajectory as an artist, where she’s been steadily expanding her comfort zone. When she started making music, she was recording songs in her bedroom, but Outdated presented her with the opportunity to collaborate in person with heavyweight producers like Psymun, Elijah Fox and Trey Campbell. She also experienced tour life for the first time earlier this year, serving as direct support for all 23 dates of redveil’s Sankofa tour across North America. The tour laid the foundation for her collaborations with both detahjae and Vayda, both of whom she met in person for the first time on the road.
In an age where artists deal with constant pressure to release new music to feed fans and algorithms, Chenayder was intentional about taking her time with Outdated, spending the past three years formulating the album to her liking. “I wanted to progress without everyone seeing [every part of] the progression,” she explains. As a result, the album is a marked demonstration of personal growth. She’s learned to navigate conflict and find effective coping mechanisms, whether by writing songs, spending restorative time alone or listening to noise music at full volume.
