The Mary Wallopers – Landlord’s Demise

The Mary Wallopers by Tom Beard

Today, Ireland’s The Mary Wallopers share their new track, “Landlord’s Demise.” It’s the latest track from their forthcoming third album, Paddywhackery, due out on September 18 via BC Records.

Clocking in at under two-minutes the pure and simple song is an eternal tale of unwanted gentry and the people rising up against it; an uprising that drives the lord to believe that even “the rats must all be Fenian now,” and the rain is Irish all the time. Part of the simplicity of “Landlord’s Demise” is the glorious solo performance by songwriter Andrew Hendy, on vocals and bohdran, with added whistle from the band’s Finnian O Connor.

Andrew Hendy on “Landlord’s Demise”:

“This is a song about the fall of empire in Ireland, and an expression of our disdain for the Landlord Class. It’s based on a true story about a Manor House falling down around its aristocratic owner, and is also inspired by Tom Barry’s book ‘Guerilla Days in Ireland’. It’s a song for all the struggling renters, in dingy flats and mould infested bathrooms, living in fear of another rent hike.”

Mary Wallopers previously shared “Crowns Of England,” a track that was described as “sure to have Nigel Farage spitting his bitter out” by The Guardian.

Produced by The Coral’s James Skelly, Paddywhackery follows 2023’s acclaimed Irish Rock’n’Roll, the first album to feature original songs written by The Mary Wallopers. The new record marks a major leap forward, capturing a band operating with a confidence, chemistry, and raw power that sets them apart from virtually anyone else making music today.

Recorded over an intense two-week session in Liverpool with Skelly and engineer Chris Taylor, Paddywhackery harnesses the band’s exhilarating live energy without sacrificing nuance or precision. The result is an album that bursts from the speakers with infectious verve, heart, and swagger – one that practically demands to be played again, and again, and again.

Andrew and Charles Hendy on the album: “It’s mainly about the fact that people would call us “paddywhackery” because we are too Irish or whatever, but it’s all very fucking hip to be Irish the last couple of years, and maybe that’s performative too, it’s very sincere. If all you do is serious songs, it sterilises everything. It becomes like there’s only one human emotion and its seriousness. People are terrified of being laughed at. If people are going to call us paddywhackery anyway, we might as well just call the album Paddywhackery. So its more of a “fuck you” than anything else. We want to spread like a virus and destroy anyone who thinks they are above The Mary Wallopers”
