Aya Samra – Madina

Aya Samra

Rising Palestinian artist Aya Samra unveils her highly anticipated new single, “Madina,” available now via EMPIRE.

The release arrives alongside a cinematic official music video that brings the song’s emotional world to life through flamenco-inspired choreography and romantic courtyard-set visuals.

Following a viral breakthrough that introduced her voice to millions worldwide, the Berlin-based singer-songwriter returns with an evocative Arabic-language record that bridges classical heritage and contemporary storytelling. “Madina” marks a striking evolution in Samra’s artistry, blending the emotional depth of classical Arabic Tarab with the rhythmic tension of Spanish flamenco guitar. Guided by her velvet-toned vocals, the song creates an intimate yet expansive soundscape exploring identity, belonging, and emotional survival.

Written during a period of profound self-reflection and uncertainty, “Madina” began as an imagined city before revealing itself as something far more personal. Through imagery of bridges, mountains, and oceans, the song transforms an external landscape into an internal one, tracing a journey through displacement, hope, and the search for a place to belong.

“There was a period in my life when I was trying to understand myself and the world around me,” Samra explains. “I was trying to imagine a future that was still unclear, while dealing with fear, depression, and uncertainty.”

She continues, “I asked myself what if there was a city that resembled the kind of people who still believe in love and honesty despite everything. A place that does not reward cruelty, does not exist through fear, and does not ask you to abandon yourself in order to belong. I realized I wasn’t writing about a city anymore. I was writing about a woman fighting to stay alive, confronting everything she had been taught to believe about herself.”

Born to a Palestinian family with roots tracing back to Tantura and raised in Syria, Samra’s artistry is deeply informed by displacement, resilience, and cultural memory. In 2015, at just 15 years old, she embarked on a grueling 30-day journey by foot from Syria to Germany alongside her father and brother while seeking asylum, an experience that continues to shape the emotional honesty of her songwriting. Influenced by legendary Arab voices including Fairuz, Umm Kulthum, Warda, and Asmahan, as well as global vocalists such as Celine Dion, Lara Fabian, and Mariah Carey, she has developed a sound that seamlessly bridges Eastern musical traditions and contemporary influences.

Samra first captured international attention in early 2025 when a spontaneous performance of Asmahan’s classic “Ya Habibi Taala,” accompanied only by a friend’s beatboxing, exploded on Instagram and TikTok, garnering more than 100 million views. The viral moment introduced millions to her unique ability to reimagine golden-era Arab music for a new generation and has since helped propel her to more than 215 million total views across digital platforms. Her debut original single, “For Life,” paid tribute to Gaza, with proceeds supporting humanitarian relief efforts. Since then, she has continued her rapid ascent with performances across Europe, including Berlin’s All Eyes on Gaza rally before approximately 150,000 attendees and festival appearances in Germany and the Netherlands.
