Sad Daddy – Bootlegger

Arkansas roots outfit Sad Daddy release “Bootlegger” from their forthcoming LP Ozark Shine, distributed by Free Dirt Records, out June 26.
Sad Daddy is Brian Martin, Melissa Carper, Joe Sundell, and Rebecca Patek – Ozark Shine is their first album since 2022’s Way Up In The Hills. Written and sung by Brian Martin, “Bootlegger” began as a half-finished idea that sat dormant for more than a decade before finally finding its footing during sessions for the new record. What emerged is a darkly rollicking Ozark lament – equal parts old-time country noir, front-porch stomp, and hard-won reckoning.
Built around Brian’s gravelly vocals and the band’s unmistakable blend of country, blues, folk, and old-time stringband sensibilities, the contemplative song traces a man’s desperate plea to outrun heartbreak at the bottom of a bottle before ultimately finding the resolve to send the bootlegger away for good. It’s a classic drinking song with a deeper undercurrent – less about surrendering to the bottle than wrestling your way back from it.
The single offers a perfect snapshot of what makes Sad Daddy so special. Since forming in Arkansas in 2010, the quartet has carved out a sound all their own, pulling from early blues, jazz, jug band, bluegrass, country, and porch-stomping folk traditions. Recorded at Nashville’s Bomb Shelter, Ozark Shine captures the band at full stride, building on the collaborative spirit that sent Way Up in the Hills to No. 1 on the Alt Country Specialty Chart.
