The Army, The Navy – Down Debbie/Reservoir

Today, Los Angeles-based duo The Army, The Navy share their final single “Down Debbie/Reservoir” from their upcoming album Fake Brave Life out June 12 on Independent Co.
Sasha Goldberg and Maia Ciambriello share a rare and potent synergy, that’s evident across “Down Debbie/Reservoir.” Stunning vocals dissolve into angelic harmonies, set against a lush arrangement of strings. The duo navigates the delicate tension of intimacy, fluctuating between the desire to open themselves to a deeper connection and the instinct to hold back.
“‘Down Debbie’ is a lush R&B track that dives into the tension between craving deep connection and the instinct to protect yourself from it,” they say about the song. “The track captures a truth that is rarely spoken about, that sometimes the warmth of another person can feel more stifling than their distance. The song was written from a place of true self awareness, remembering what it’s like to be fully alive, laughing at jokes that no longer spark joy. This song sits with that awareness and brings honesty to it. ‘I think back to funny jokes, back when I had feeling’. Sit down, listen to the wind chimes, it’s okay if you can’t hear their beauty right now.”
Sasha and Maia have a cosmic connection. Growing up in the Bay Area, they were familiar with each other’s existence but it wasn’t until their time as undergraduates at Loyola University at New Orleans studying songwriting where they really connected. In a city rich with cultural history, The Army, The Navy took shape without a plan in mind. As roommates, the duo worked on songs individually–Maia in one corner of the room, Sasha in the other–but eventually they were drawn to one another’s process, combining ideas to build something new out of two distinctive minds.

The duo began to amass a following in the beginning of 2023 with their viral single “Vienna (In Memorium)” and kept their momentum going with 2024 EPs: Fruit for Flies and Sugar for Bugs. With their success continuing to grow, The Army The Navy threw themselves into making their debut album Fake Brave Life. What started as an intimate process between two friends evolved into a full-blown studio production, bringing in producers Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, Of Montreal, Toro y Moi), BLEACHERS’ Mikey Freedom Hart (Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey, The Chicks), session musicians and a string quartet who helped enact their vision. With a lush arrangement of instruments came Maia and Sasha’s stunning storytelling, digging deeper into their uniquely shared experiences of love and the loss of it, featuring songs written from past versions of themselves at Loyola University to their present lives as roommates in Los Angeles.
“Down Debbie/”Reservoir” follows early singles “2 Collide”, “Pretty, Pink and Soft” and “Walls,” which received early support from Alternative Press, Northern Transmissions, To Be Frank, and more. The band recently announced they’ll play Lollapalooza this August and will support Lord Huron in July after recent support tours with Joy Crookes, Dora Jar, Paris Paloma, and more.
