Kim Petras – DETOUR

Today, GRAMMY® Award-winning pop powerhouse singer and songwriter Kim Petras has released her much anticipated (and self-proclaimed debut) studio album, Detour.

The album is now available on all streaming platforms via BunHead Records, the independent label Kim started in 2016.
Flooded with Kim’s signature fusion of club roots, sharp lyricism, and emotional honesty – Detour is shaped to be Kim’s most personal, evolved and inspired music to date.
Executive Produced by Kim and Margo XS, the album was recorded in Los Angeles, California and completed in mid-2025. In addition to writing on every song, Kim collaborates with a stellar pool of songwriters including Lulu & Angel Prost, Margo Wildman, Madison Love, Nick Weiss, Aaron Maine and more – assembling thirteen eclectic yet perfectly-Petras songs. The songs have been blessed with a distinct production by Margo XS, Frost Children, Nightfeelings, Porches (among others) who give Detour a solid thruline. Also gracing one of the tracks is the late SOPHIE who both wrote and produced on the track, “Basketball,” alongside producer/songwriter duo BC Kingdom.
For the visual world of Detour, Kim collaborated with Creative Director Eli Sheppard. The visual language of the album was intended to reflect the journey of Kim’s career; rejecting the polished pop-star aesthetic in favor of something grounded. Much of the imagery was captured with spontaneity on a simple iPhone 4. The usage of discarded receipts, parking tickets and other ephemera were used to share project details instead of flat text graphics; objects that are touched, accumulated and sometimes considered keepsakes. Rather than flashy cars, to reinforce the idea of detour there were themes of roadwork and construction, because this has not been a scenic detour but one of traffic, grit and roadblocks. Fusing a love for vintage fashion, pop silhouettes and nostalgic fads, Kim mainly self-styled this entire album campaign, sourcing looks from European second-hand boutiques, online resale collectives and her own closet of archives.
Kim amplified her singles with a string of self-funded (and self-styled) music videos. Freak It, I Like Ur Look and the most grand Need For Speed not only showed Kim’s dedication to reclaiming her creative vision for Detour, but her grassroots resourcefulness to bring her fans art that is authentic. Following these releases, Kim pulled off a standout, self-funded performance of “Jeep” on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with visuals that can only be defined as an honest extension of the music video for her latest video, Jeep. Additionally, Jeep has garnered love on social media from friends and collaborators such as Charli XCX and MUNA, among others.
While unavoidable delays impacted the release date for Detour, Kim took February 2026 to double down on her new sound with an independently released four-track EP called Pretour, available only via YouTube (with lo-fi exclusive videos) and SoundCloud. The four songs: “Pop Sound”, “Mr Producer (feat. BC Kingdom)”, “Cha Cha”, “and “Get Some (feat. Cortisa Star)” were quickly embraced by Kim’s loyal fans who were wise to understand Kim’s desire for this special drop.
Kim has also appeared in Europe recently, DJ’ing at renowned German nightclub Berghain along with frequent collaborator/producer Margo XS, sitting front row at Gucci in Milan, and sitting front row at Courreges in Paris after hosting a private event for Nylon France where she is featured on the current cover. Kim also reunited with “Unholy” collaborator Sam Smith in San Francisco as a special surprise guest the night before headlining a special show at the famed Castro Theatre on March 15th. She will be headlining Brooklyn’s famed LadyLand Festival on June 27th.
