Mercedess – I’d Love To Be A Star, But I’m Tired As F*ck

Mercedess turns inward on the new album, I’d Love To Be A Star, But I’m Tired As Fuck.

Across 11 tracks, the Copenhagen-based alt-pop artist explores the emotional contradictions of a generation navigating ambition, anxiety and identity in an overstimulated world.
Following the widely acclaimed single ’the perfect selfie’, Mercedess expands her sonic and emotional universe with a record that moves between soft vulnerability and dark, hard-hitting soundscapes. Where ’the perfect selfie’ explored the quiet pressure of self-staging and impossible standards, the album turns further inward, tracing the tension between the desire to be seen and the exhaustion that comes with it.
At the center of the album is its striking lead single, ’I’d love to be a star’, that encapsulates the core of the project.
“I wanted the title of the album to reflect not just my own personal thoughts, but a deeply human conflict: the longing to take up space, to create, to succeed, while simultaneously feeling held back by self-doubt, burnout, and anxiety,” explains Mercedess.
Written over the course of three years, the album emerged from a period marked by introspection and creative recalibration. Most songs began as fragmented thoughts – notes written in solitude – later shaped into intuitive productions alongside co-producer Laurits Bigum Steinberg.
“I wanted to get closer to something honest,” Mercedess says. “It’s about everything I dream about and reach for, but also everything that makes it hard to actually go there. The insecurity, the overthinking, the exhaustion. It’s not a clean story – it’s a process.”
Tracks such as ’announcements’, ’affirmations’, ’solitude nest’, and ’the perfect selfie’ offer glimpses into this process, and across the album, Mercedess explores themes of loneliness, self-worth, connection, and the search for grounding in a hyper-visible culture.
Musically, the record is anchored by her signature soft and recognizable vocal, layered over intimate guitars, atmospheric textures, and bass-driven moments that add weight and tension. The contrast between light and dark mirrors the emotional landscape of the album itself.
Mercedess first gained international attention with her 2022 debut ’CASA FANTASIA’, earning support from international platforms like COLORS and Ones To Watch, as well as critical acclaim from Danish media including Soundvenue and GAFFA. With her sophomore release, she steps into a more defined artistic identity, one rooted in full creative control and an uncompromising commitment to her own voice.
’I’d love to be a star, but I’m tired as fuck’ will be released independently through Virgin Records Nordics.
