Cherry Bomb – You Oughta Know

Cherry Bomb by Harrison Woodard

Cherry Bomb, the Los Angeles-based solo project of MisterWives’ Mandy Lee, is all about putting an original spin on the music that raised her. Today, she reimagines “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morrisette, reimagining the iconic angsty anthem as a shimmering, house pop raver ready for the disco, all while keeping Lee’s powerful pop vocals as the emotional core of the piece.

From the cathartic and soulful vocals of Aretha Franklin, to the guttural rage and anthemic expressionism of Alanis Morrisette, Cherry Bomb has become a vibrant kaleidoscope of empowering women in music, catching what sparkles in her eyes and twisting it into new shapes. Her dance party take on “You Oughta Know” is “a tribute to the music that raised me and inspired Cherry Bomb,” says Mandy Lee. “‘You Oughta Know’ has and will always be a touch stone for how embodied, raw and unapologetic music should be.”

This cover is also a slight hint as to what might come next in Mandy Lee’s sparkling new solo project. “I’ve been listening to the band across the street from my house cover this classic from their garage every Saturday,” she says, “and it sparked the idea for what I should cover for these first Cherry shows. I couldn’t think of a better song to pay homage to the artists that paved the way with a very cherry twist.”

For over a decade, Mandy Lee has led alt-pop band MisterWives with her distinctly compelling vocals and commanding stage presence–including several tours, festivals around the world and four official studio albums, one live album and one deluxe album. Now, Lee is ready to shape a sonic universe that completely her own–blending party with the profound.
