mmj – nobody knows

mmj is mj (she/they) from Purity Ring’s solo music. Today marks the release of “nobody knows,” the beautiful debut single centered around mj’s distinctly crystalline voice, hypnotic, shuffling drums and theremin, available now via Captured Tracks. The release of “nobody knows” comes with a video directed by Jordan Hare, filmed in Death Valley, CA during the super bloom.
mj shares: “‘nobody knows’ is close to the sun for me. It resonates a little differently every time I play it. The opening line is: ‘nobody knows a fallen star from wildfire ash raining down on the yard.’ It presents the ways we know so little, but also the things we deny and can see if we choose to, and what we should see and be in order to survive in this place; what we deserve to have and be as individuals and collectively. ‘nobody knows’ is circular, a fractal glimpse of humanity in the span of a song. I hope you feel it.”
mmj is a transmission from an unknown place and time, the sound of lost folk songs refracted through a haunted lens of dream pop and shoegaze.
According to mj: “This solo project has been a long time coming, it fills me with joy to finally be sharing it. Thank you for sticking with me all these years, thank you for being here and getting here however you have. I hope you find what I do in the songs that will come out of this project. I hope you can hear in them how they were made, and what they invoke in our humanity as physical creatures that respond to senses. I hope you find this pulls you into a world of things you didn’t know you’d lost. This music is built around all the things I’ve loved. Everything has been touched by real hands, tape, tubes or all the above. Everything I sing I feel with my whole body. All of me is in this and I hope it becomes a part of you too.”
