Following the release of the This Old House EP and a range of lauded standalone singles, Role Model Hermit is a collection of dark fables, intricate melodies and moments of revelation comprising one of the most enticing British debuts in recent memory.
mary in the junkyard — Clari-Freeman Taylor (vocals, guitar, cello, viola, violin), Saya Barbaglia (Bass, viola, violin, backing vocals) and David Addison (drums) — wrote Role Model Hermit between the UK and US and recorded it in London during the summer of 2025 with producer Oli Bayston (Boxed In). Throughout its runtime, the album walks the line between fact and fiction with a real sense of bite and moments of poignancy, while always creeping into the phantasmagoric.
“Crash Landing” is a beautiful first glimpse into the world of Role Model Hermit. The song is a powerful ballad that details the fallout of a previous relationship and the fragility of two people who are cracking under the strain. The track finds Freeman-Taylor at her most direct, while Barbaglia and Addison provide walls of opulent string arrangements and a trip-hop groove. Commenting on the song, Freeman-Taylor says: “It’s about fear and how men often rely on keeping their emotions secret, and how you have to crack them open. To be the only one that’s seeing one side of someone, it’s trapping.”
