For MEGA FÄUNA, the journey to get to this point starts back with their debut in 2020. Created against a social climate that was riddled with uncertainties and a sense of restlessness, MEGA FÄUNA became not only a new avenue for creative expression for these five musicians, but a personal salve during this time. The band, comprising members of outfits THE BUOYS, SWEETIE, WILES SKELETEN, and BABY BEEF features striking personalities and talents that have come together here in building a strong sonic foundation.
Across softmore, the listener is able to immerse themselves in these moments of charismatic indie Australiana. From the jangle-laden vibrancy of lead single ‘heartbeat’ and driving pace of ‘bb there’, this is an album primed to get lost in.
A song like ‘make believe’ hypnotises, as the lyrics navigate the complexity of a relationship “with someone who takes you for granted. Where you have lost yourself in someone else. Almost in idolisation and adoration, and feeling that they only value you when you are something to lose, or when they need something…”

Guitars blend beautifully with synths and rhythms to offer moments of nostalgia and hazy romanticism, but in the vocals, the listener can find a striking anchor that holds steady throughout the whole journey. The group explores the natural passage of time (‘new skin’) and life’s unique catalyst moments (‘unheld’, ‘windows down’) in a way that remains accessible, yet incredibly personal.
