Triples – Gonna Be Good

Triples2

In December Triples, the musical project of Toronto-based songwriter and actor Eva Link, announced their signing to the new Toronto imprint Bleak Enterprise and their new EP Every Good Story, which will be released by the label on January 30th.

The band was initially founded as a duo with Eva’s sister Madeline, but when the success of Madeline’s own project – the Fire Talk signees PACKS – began demanding more of her time, Eva reimagined Triples as her own endeavor. The EP is the first release of this new era of Triples, and was announced with a track called “Be Around,” which received a great response following its December release, earning Best of The Week honors from Pitchfork, Alt Press and Paste, and further praise from The Line of Best Fit and Exclaim among others.

Today, Triples are back to share a second single from the EP, a track called “Gonna Be Good.”

“Gonna Be Good” perfectly encapsulates Triples capacity for poignant power pop. A song about overcoming anxiety and self-doubt, the track channels layers of 90s guitar pop influences, from the downbeat, lo-fi feel of Exile In Guyville-era Liz Phair to the streamlined punch of Matthew Sweet and Fountains of Wayne. It’s a sugar rush of a song with a touch of melancholy that establishes Link as an immensely promising songwriting voice.

Link says of the track:

I was in a down and anxious state of mind, but I didn’t want to write a song about it. I thought that, by writing about it directly, I would be commemorating it, plus overthinking it all was just plain exhausting. I was indignant towards these feelings of doubt and feeling guilty for no reason – I wanted to have power over them. I wanted to fight back against these annoying feelings so they’d just go away. (It’s obviously not that simple, but it felt cathartic to firmly decide “this time I’m gonna be good”)
