Woman

Joy Jefford’s debut EP Woman celebrates the joy’s and trials of maturity with five songs that explore life’s transitions, caring roles, love, the wonder of the natural world and the universal quest to live well.  Some tracks will particularly speak to women in mid and later life, especially those with caring responsibilities or whose children are leaving home.  But there are resonances here for all new beginnings and threshold moments.

Conveyed in a voice that is both tender and powerful, her songs often touch and move.  Joy’s influences, including Joni Mitchell, Carol King, Suzanne Vega, Michelle Shocked and Laura Viers are evident in the strong melodies and intimate lyrics.

The album was produced by Jake Skinner of Echopine Music (Alexis Taylor (Hot Chip), Eurovision legend Sam Ryder, Brit Award-winning violin virtuoso Nigel Kennedy) with Fred Hills on drums (of the Fred Hills Trio and drummer for Ellie Ford amongst others) and multi-instrumentalist Andy Stuart-Buttle (who has supported Paul Weller, Ben Howard, and The Staves) on guitar, piano, organ, strings and backing vocals.

The title track ‘Woman’ is a heartfelt call to carers to make space for their own needs.  The sensitive backing vocals and engaging string counter melodies add depth and interest as this piano ballad unfolds.

Joni Mitchell fans will love ‘Full Circle’, a homage to ‘The Circle Game’.  This time the protagonist is a woman and the song narrates their full life span rather than just the first 30 years. The guitar arrangement, and song structure echo Joni’s masterpiece, but the new melody, chord progression and lyrics bring a beauty all of their own.

‘Living in a Work of Art’ is a celebration of the joy, wonder and mystery of being alive. The sensitive and laid-back band arrangement including flute and recorder creates a unique and contemporary sound.

‘Faith’ is an invitation to let go and trust in the goodness of life.  The upbeat vibe will appeal to Americana fans and the addition of new melodies and instruments as the song develops creates a satisfying finale.

The final track ‘Blessings’ is parent’s love song to a young adult child stepping out into the world for the first time.  The simple arrangement of piano, guitar and strings leaves plenty of space for the beauty of the lyrical sentiment to sing out. Blessings will be released on 9th September 2025
