Pacing – Never Go Down

Anti-folk songwriter Katie McTigue today shares a new Pacing single “Never Go Down” ahead of her forthcoming sophomore album PL*NET F*TNESS, out July 25 via Asian Man Records.
“Never Go Down” was born when McTigue stumbled upon lyrics to Fred Rogers’s 1975 children’s song “You Can Never Go Down the Drain.” Having never listened to the song, McTigue re-scored the lyrics to Elliott-Smith-style chords and a fresh melody, turning the once-comforting refrain into an unsettling mantra of blind devotion.
“I think of my version as an unconditional love song for a cult leader,” says McTigue. In the song, she repeats the lyric “you can never go down,” harmonizing with herself over a backdrop of sparse guitar and a distorted audio clip. “Repeating something over and over does not make it true,” McTigue continues, “But it does make you feel kind of powerful.”
Recorded partly at home and partly at District Recording in San Jose with engineer Ryan Perras (who also mixed and mastered), PL*NET F*TNESS finds McTigue wrestling with life’s non-negotiables – work commutes, hospital vigils, parking tickets – and what meaning (or absurdity) lurks beneath.

Pacing will also be on tour this summer supporting AJJ, followed by album release shows.
