Gatlin – The Eldest Daughter

Gatlin by Luke Rogers2

“I know now who I am, where I’m from, and where I’m going.” That’s how Los Angeles-based, Florida-born Gatlin describes the journey of creating her debut album The Eldest Daughter – which will be released October 3 on Dualtone Records.

The Eldest Daughter

Both a reclamation of self and an unflinching confrontation of her past, The Eldest Daughter fuses Gatlin’s sharp wit and intimate storytelling to explore her experiences with queerness, mental health, gender roles and family tension. Throughout the collection’s ten songs, Gatlin reflects on coming out in the deeply conservative and religious community where she was raised, and the transformative moments that resulted: the pain of rejection, the questioning of all she’d ever known, and ultimately the liberation of creating a chosen life on her own terms. “It’s not only about taking control of the life I’ve decided to live,” reflects Gatlin on her debut album. “But sticking up for it.”

With the announcement of The Eldest Daughter, Gatlin has shared “Jesus Christ & Country Clubs” – a new song (and accompanying visual) that find her holding a mirror to the hypocrisy of those flawed communal beliefs.

Equally cathartic and hilarious – it serves as a defiant refusal to be anything other than her full self, especially to meet the norms of a close-minded worldview. “I played a part for so many years growing up and when I finally left Florida I really got to discover who I am…and parts of who I am are rejected by my community and family. This track is about not being able to fit in where I grew up, and not wanting to.” The song was written alongside Gatlin’s close collaborators Liza Owen (Carly Rae Jepsen, Selena Gomez) and Jennifer Decilveo (Miley Cyrus, Hozier).
