Girlpuppy – Since April

girlpuppy Tonje Thilesen

Today girlpuppy, the musical project from Atlanta, GA’s Becca Harvey, shares “Since April,” the newest single from her upcoming full-length album, titled Sweetness, due for release March 28, 2025 on Captured Tracks. Sweetness is a raw and deeply personal exploration of the emotions that follow a breakup, touching on themes of grief, transformation, and growth. Written in the wake of a four-year relationship, Harvey’s songwriting unfolds like a journal—honest, detailed, and emotionally resonant.

Crafted with the help of Asheville-based producer and co-writer Alex Farrar, along with additional co-writer Tom Sinclair, “Since April” builds a nostalgic and viscerally satisfying soundscape. Powered by thick layers of distorted guitar, thunderous drums reminiscent of the pop-punk anthems of her youth, and irresistibly bittersweet hooks (“every day is hard / every single day”), the song channels both raw defiance and longing.

Reflecting on the track, girlpuppy shares: “I wrote this song very early in my breakup when I was grieving ‘every single day.’ The original demo was so different from what Alex and I ended up creating, but I love this version so much more. It brings an attitude to the song that transforms it beyond just sad lyrics and chords.”

The release of “Since April” comes accompanied by a video directed by Miles Robbins. According to Becca Harvey: “I had so much fun making this video with Miles and the rest of the team. I think it makes the song hit harder and perfectly displays the suffering I was going through when I wrote it.”

Director Miles Robbins shares: “‘Since April’ captures the feeling of arduously bearing the weight of a bitter breakup. I wanted to make something to visually capture how that feeling is so dramatic but self-contained. In the video, girlpuppy punches the clock at an absurd facility, where she conducts a series of torments and unpleasant experiments on herself (paying homage to a few favorite pieces of endurance art) while the void of her lover passively watches. I worked with Becca and our amazing production designers Yisel Garcia and Sadie Spezzano to build a little, handmade, Trecartin-inspired set, and shot everything with consumer cameras (MiniDV/Super 8.) It was such a fun and scrappy way to make something and I think that playfulness comes through in the piece.”
