Metronomy played to an enthusiastic crowd at the Summit Music Hall, but before I talk about them I feel compelled to talk a little about the opening act. Glüme (pronounced Gloom).

Güme is a lovely Italian songstress who took the stage wearing not much more than a clear plastic bustier and shorts covered by a wispy white cloak, which was removed after a few songs. Her privates were covered, but not much else. She had “HEAVEN” tattooed on her tummy and to look at her you might think you were indeed in heaven. She was accompanied by a guy playing keyboards. Glüme herself sang and danced and strutted about as if she were quite familiar and confident with her presence on the stage. When she twirled her tassels, she reminded me of nothing as much as a high-end stripper who could actually sing. So that part was fun.

Metronomy, from the UK, who I had never heard before, came out and, thankfully, played a full range of instruments. Drums, bass, guitars, and keyboards, so while it was electronica, it was also a real band and it’s safe to call them rock-and-roll.  The most notable aspect of the band is the drummer, Anna Prior.  They showcased her by putting her on a riser in the center back of the stage with nobody set up directly in front of her. The primary vocalist and guitar player, Joseph Mount, kept things rocking. The rest of the band  Oscar Cash,  Olugbenga Adelekan, and Michael Lovett were really good players in their own right.  The crowd sang along with most of the songs. That’s always a surefire sign that a band is doing a lot of things right.

It was nice that this was a full band and not just a person with a Casio keyboard and dreams of being a rock star. In fact, the sound wasn’t overly electronic, nor overly retro-1980s (you know, those bands that sound like an old 8-bit video game). It was original, fun, and easy on the ears. GO see them and/or buy their music if you can. Check out my photos below and comment if you want to.
