Matilda Sutherland – Cowgirl Manifesto

Matilda Sutherland releases her new EP Cowgirl Manifesto independently,

The focus track for the EP is “Wild Mustang,” paired with a video directed and cut by Josephine Sutherland.

The clip follows a girl dancing in front of her mirror, imagining another version of herself as her daytime doppelgänger loses herself in the smoke and stage lights of the club at night.

Written across Melbourne and Switzerland and recorded live in Thornbury, Cowgirl Manifesto carries on the gritty storytelling tradition of Patti Smith with the tenderness and stylings of Dolly Parton, PJ Harvey and Sharon Van Etten, moving between steel-soaked folk and distorted rock.

Matilda began her career as DJ MTLDA in Melbourne’s underground techno scene before picking up an old acoustic guitar during the pandemic. Her country-punk Holy Water EP received high rotation on RTR FM and airplay on RRR and PBS FM, with Cowgirl Manifesto singles “Silver Thorn” and “Joanne” receiving airplay on ABC Country, RRR, PBS and fbi.radio.
