Chanpan – speculations
Today, the New York City trio Chanpan announce new Europe and Asia dates for their autogratis tour. The announcement arrives on the heels of their new single and corresponding video, “speculations,” which they shared yesterday, produced with Oscar Scheller (PinkPantheress, Zara Larsson, Kelela).
The track takes the band’s characteristically bold and defiant sound, exploding into four-on-the-floor kicks, ear-candy synths, and a propulsive drop that trades acoustic guitar for full-blown dancefloor euphoria. Lyrically, “speculations” wrestles with the expectations and anxieties that come with a newfound music career, ultimately turning that uncertainty into an anthem for letting go and moving forward. Shot mostly on VHS, the music video gives a DIY inside look at the band letting loose on a trip to Coney Island’s amusement park and boardwalk, capturing moments of catharsis as they dance from one ride to the next until sundown.
Speaking on the single, the band states: “speculations weighs our self-doubts from this newfound music career while ultimately choosing to move forward fearlessly. Let this song be permission to go for it and dance like no one is watching!”
The single follows the June release of their latest EP, autogratis, and its ensuing, autogratis (Remixes) EP, which featured reimagined tracks by HOMESHAKE, Salami Rose Joe Louis, and Tom VR, among others, and arrived in August. The EPs marked another step forward in the trio’s evolving sound. They are currently on the road in support of the projects, with the tour set to wrap later this month with a hometown show at New York’s Baby’s All Right, bringing the autogratis era full circle.
autogratis is a step from the worldliness of their debut EP endlessly into the personal, laced with vulnerability and self-liberation, detailing the experience of their rapidly changing lives. Chanpan embrace their instinctive, unfiltered creative voice across the compilation, which includes their singles “i got a gun,” “confessions part iii,” and “buzzin,” which premiered as a performance on COLORS.
