Summer Hayes – Bloody Mary

Alt-rock artist Summer Hayes releases “Bloody Mary.”
The track itself highlights queer self discovery detailing Summer’s experience with a same-sex hookup in the bathroom at a strip club. Specifically, it focuses on the idea that change can be uncomfortable, much like the shared experience among women once a month when they get their period. Her sound is inspired by artists like Chappell Roan, Stevie Nicks, and Heart.
“Bloody Mary” is a blood-soaked period-sex fever dream about the terror and power of becoming someone you don’t entirely recognize once a month. A chapter from Summer Hayes’ forthcoming concept album, it begins with a hookup with a stripper in a grimy strip-club bathroom and spirals into something stranger: part period-sex anthem, part feminine horror story. Beneath the blood and body horror of being a woman, the song explores rage becoming release, fear becoming power, and the “second puberty” of queer self-discovery. Like saying Bloody Mary into a mirror three times at a slumber party, it’s about approaching what you were taught to fear and finding out who might be looking back.
