Jasmyn – Anything You Want

Jasmyn by Mariah Hamilton2

Today, Jasmyn (former frontperson of Weaves) returns with “Anything You Want”, a bouncy indie pop track that mirrors an inner-dialogue and the challenging push-and-pull that precedes acceptance. The song paves way for a new era for the singer-songwriter, not only asserting the artist’s melodic mastery but reflecting a newfound balance between life and art.

Jasmyn says of the single:

“It feels like a joyous song to me: a song I had to pull out of a drawer after years of feeling pushed down and frustrated. I’m standing back up and doing things my way, on my own terms, and that feels invigorating.”

She quit her band, got dropped by her label, and lost herself for a while. Now Jasmyn is asking the question that’s been chasing her for years: can you take a chance on yourself again, even when you’re scared? “Anything You Want” is where she starts answering it, the first sign of a new album slowly taking shape.

Jasmyn Burke fronted Toronto’s Weaves, writing songs that earned Polaris and Juno nominations, a Glastonbury slot, and opening dates for Mitski and Sunflower Bean. Six weeks into 2020, she quit the band, needing to find out who she was outside it all. Weeks later, the world shut down, and with nowhere to go and nothing to tour, she started writing demos at home.

Within six months those demos had caught the attention of record labels, and she was flying to LA mid-pandemic to record with Grammy-nominated producer John Congleton. It looked like a new start. She toured Europe, opened for Broken Social Scene, but within a year, the label had dropped her.

Not knowing what would come next, she went back to school, a postgraduate diploma in Creative and Digital Strategy, something to hold onto while she figured out the rest. It wasn’t as far from music as it seemed; she’d always done things her own way. A month after finishing, she found out she was pregnant. Motherhood changed her relationship to music. After years of feeling uncertain about her place in the industry, having a child brought a new clarity, and a new reason to create. A label wasn’t waiting. A band wasn’t touring. She just wanted to make something with no inhibitions, and whether the industry was on board or not.

Meanwhile, the Weaves back catalog and her solo music were finding new life through sync placements on places such as Apple TV+’s Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Riot Women, as well as Sportsnet, a reminder that songs don’t always move on a linear timeline. So, she started building a new record, this time about taking a chance on herself and what it means to be an artist after everything falls apart. “Anything You Want” was co-produced remotely with UK video-game composer Luciano Rossi (Life is Strange, Dead Island 2). It captures the tension of staying put, measuring herself against everyone else, or moving forward into something freer and joyful.

Jasmyn doesn’t have to choose or wait. The life she’s building and the art she’s making can coexist, a label or none at all. This time, it’s just her instincts, artistry, and the people she trusts pushing her forward, building it her way. It’s scary. It’s also exciting. “Anything You Want” is where it starts.
