Mia Joy ft Peel Dream Magazine – Comet
Mia Joy — the “mesmirizing” (DIY) Chicago-based musician — returns today to unveil her new single/video, “Comet (feat. Peel Dream Magazine).”
Over the 5 years since the release of her “compelling and spiritual” (Bandcamp) debut album, Spirit Tamer, Mia Joy has been quietly working on her next batch of music; today Joy unveils the first preview of this output. “Comet (feat Peel Dream Magazine)” marks not only Joy’s return, but the first entry in her catalog to feature an outside collaborator. Tapping fellow lo-fi pop auteur Peel Dream Magazine (aka Joe Stevens), “Comet” sees Mia Joy double down on her signature dreampop palette, with the thrilling addition of dream loops and a hypnotic guitarline. “They say desire is // the root of all evil,” Joy whispers before Stevens joins the song’s simple and infectious chorus.
“Comet” is presented alongside a music video. Collaging footage of Joy in sunny Los Angeles amidst the greenery and fireworks, the “Comet” video is as sweet as it is affective. “Thrilled to finally announce this very special song and video,” Joy says. “Thank you to Joe of Peel Dream Magazine for featuring on this song, a band I’ve long admired. Peel Dream Magazine adds: “I’ve been a fan of Mia’s for a while now. I first saw her live at Lodge Room in LA where I used to work, and we got to play together in Chicago last year at Empty Bottle, which was a great time. We worked on this remotely, sending stems back and forth, and the song started taking shape in a really organic way … the final version is so warm and nostalgic. I’m happy it’s finally out in the world.”
Following the release of Spirit Tamer, Mia Joy released 2023’s Celestial Mirror EP and earned praise from FLOOD, FADER, and Post-Trash among others. Over the years Joy has toured both projects relentlessly, joining the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Babehoven, 22º Halo, Dan English, Wombo and countless other artists who hold Joy’s “compelling and spiritual dream pop” (Bandcamp) close to their hearts. Joy’s knack for “delicate dream pop” (Paste) has made her a favorite among today’s league of independent artists including Maria Somervile and Midwife, with both consistently featuring Mia on their respective NTS programs. Joy’s community has uplifted and supported her throughout her time away from releasing music, with many aiding in her trove of music yet to come.
