Sour Widows – Choke Chain

Sour Widows – the Bay Area alternative rock duo comprised of Maia Sinaiko and Susanna Thomson – share “Choke Chain,” the latest from their forthcoming album, Sigil, due October 23rd via Julia’s War Recordings.

Lumbering with doom guitars and marching drums, “Choke Chain” rides the line between the violence and gentleness of sex.

“In Egyptian mythology, when someone dies, the god Anubis weighs their heart against a feather to determine the fate of their soul – I like to think that when I’m dead, the relationships that caused me hurt will probably feel amusing,” Susanna Thomson explains. “It’s difficult to talk about the inherent consequences of desire as a woman without projections of cynicism and misogyny. The lyrics say it best.”

Sigil was crafted with acclaimed producer and Jay Som mastermind Melina Duterte (boygenius) in downtown Los Angeles. Its songs curve in unexpected directions and are the most magnetic the band have written yet. There is a newfound immediacy to the album as if Sour Widows have urgent findings to share, and throughout Sigil, ostensible disaster ushers in a new start as a feeling of hope slithers from every dark corner. The album is available for pre-order on tape, CD, and vinyl, including a Julia’s War exclusive splatter vinyl limited to 200 copies.

Sour Widows are hitting the road this fall in support of Sigil on a tour with Squirrel Flower.
