Tash Sultana – Something In The Water

Multi-instrumentalist, producer and engineer Tash Sultana released her new single and music video “Something In The Water” out today. Their first new music since signing a global deal with BMG earlier this year, and the opening of a new chapter for one of Australia’s most influential musical exports.

“Something In The Water” sits right in the pocket Tash Sultana built their name on. Warm guitar, a groove that takes its time, and vocals that move from velvet-smooth to full power. It’s the kind of sonic alchemy Tash has always made alone, and the back half stretches out and lets the playing do the talking.

Tash discusses the new single, “For a little while, I lost my way. I had to step back, strip everything away and find the road home to myself. Over the past year and a half, my life has changed in ways I never could have imagined. Now, I’m turning the page and letting go of everything that no longer belongs to me – old relationships, former versions of myself, the image of who I thought I had to be, and the direction I thought my career should take. The past is the past. This is the sound of releasing it – and stepping into whatever comes next.”

The accompanying video takes its shape from a numerology reading Tash was given a decade ago, one that turned out to be uncannily close to what followed. Four cards map the story out, The Avalanche, The Climb, The Summit and Dominance, and the clip brings each of them to life through several versions of Tash’s own personality.

“10 years ago, a numerologist gave me a prediction of my future that turned out to be eerily accurate,” Tash says. “It stuck with me and became a pivotal point in how I understood myself and the energy around me. I lost that magic for a while when I veered off course, surrounded by people and situations I needed to separate from. To map the past, present and future, I created four cards: The Avalanche (the past), The Climb (the present), The Summit (the next step), and Dominance (the dream). The clip brings them to life through the interplay of multiple versions of my personality.”

Tash has described this era as deliberately human and anti-artificial. Everything on it comes from real performances, real instruments and real recordings, sometimes landed in one take and sometimes after hundreds. It follows the hardest five years of their life, personally and professionally, and a decision to separate from the people, systems and versions of themselves that had stopped serving them. In Tash’s words, it is about reclaiming their career, their identity and their reason for making music in the first place.
