Review
This was the best show I’ve seen all year! I’ve seen 51 shows so far this year.
My editor and I have been looking forward to seeing Haute & Freddy live since our friend Sheena brought them to our attention in 2024, when they first posted their song “Scantily Clad.” They are finally touring all over the country on their Big Disgrace Tour. The Denver stop was at the Bluebird Theater. The crowd was packed with people in full creative Masquerade outfits ranging from elegant to outlandish.
The Rubin Brothers opened the show with a fun set of vaudeville-style fun. They sang a song about cheese,, they juggled, they performed feats of derring-do, such as climbing up on the Double-Bass and juggling, riding around on a unicycle while playing that massive bass, and playing trumpet while riding a unicycle blindfolded. They were fun, fearless, and highly amusing! They had the crowd join them in singing, and told corny jokes. They did an improvised song after asking the audience a few questions, resulting in a song about unicorns and a pencil box. It was hilarious and clever!
Haute & Freddy took the stage after a remarkably short intermission and proceeded to entertain and engage the crowd like few other artists seem capable. Freddy (Lance Shipp) played drums and occasionally keys, depending on the song, laying down a solid beat behind Haute’s (Michelle Buzz) skillful vocals. They played all the favorites previously only available on Social Media: “Dance The Pain Away”, “Sophie” and “Freaks.” Haute handed out roses to costumed people in the front row. As a buildup to “Scantily Clad” they selected members of the audience who wore especially notable costumes and invited them onstage to play the parts of the King, Queen, Knights, etc. A full royal court. Then we all sang along with them on the song. Haute asked if it was anyone’s birthday, and when met with silence, a couple in the crowd announced that they were getting married the next day, so H&F improvised a song in their honor. They invited the Rubin Brothers back on stage, whereupon Freddy climbed up on the double-bass and juggled. When Haute announced they would play their only cover song of the night, “Let’s Dance” “…because Bowie,” the crowd agreed and sang along. Honestly, I’m not sure if there was a song all night where the crowd did not sing along. They ended the night with a strong rendition of their latest hit “Shy Girl.” They did it all while making everyone feel welcome, engaged, and happy.
Overall, this was a very fun and entertaining show, unlike any I have experienced before. Maybe we need to try bringing Vaudeville back on a regular basis.
