Your Mate’s Ex – Bunny On The Run

Manchester’s newest and most exciting party-starters Your Mate’s Ex return with their new single ‘Bunny On The Run’ via APOLLO Distribution. Electro influences meet playful synth production and a driving beat, resulting in something infectious, full of attitude, and built for the dancefloor. It’s another example of their knack for making upbeat music that nods to the past while staying firmly current.
Inspired by a still from a vintage adult film, ‘Bunny On The Run’ builds around the image of a playboy bunny mid-heist. The track leans into tongue-in-cheek lyricism to bring that character to life, “Diamanté pearls on a lavender gun / She pulled up with the girls, took the money and run”, sketching out a world of glamour and desire with a sense of danger and indulgence.
While Your Mate’s Ex have always drawn from house and club influences, there’s still a distinct indie instinct running through what they do. On ‘Bunny On The Run’, that balance shifts slightly. The rougher, grunge edges take a step back, making space for a more groove-led approach. The result is something that still nods to early 2000s revivalism, but feels more focused on movement and momentum.
There are clear touchpoints, fans of acts like Confidence Man will recognise the punchy, offbeat delivery, as the track lands somewhere between electroclash and indie-sleaze.
Following on from recent single ‘Get Wet’, the new track continues to sketch out a broader project set to land later this year. Together, these releases point towards a body of work rooted in energy and personality, which is something the pair have quickly become known for.
Support has been building steadily. With backing from Radio 1 and recognition from BBC Introducing Leeds, who included them in their ‘Best of the Year So Far’, Your Mate’s Ex are creating their own space within the UK’s dance scene. ‘Bunny On The Run’ feels like another step forward, as we inch closer to their debut EP release.
