Jena Malone – You’ve Been On My Mind

Today, multi-disciplinary singer-songwriter, actress, photographer, and writer Jena Malone unveils a new single, “You’ve Been On My Mind,” alongside a technicolored lyric video.

This marks the second single ahead of her upcoming album, Flowers for Men, out everywhere May 8 via her record label There Was An Old Woman Records.

Flowers For Men

Beginning with a voicemail beep, “You’ve Been On My Mind” is a diaristic vignette and window into Jena’s narrative world. Misaligned desires come to a head on the track, with a chorus that echoes false promises and a refrain that captures true intentions. Through synth and distorted vocals, Jena professes, “I’m arresting him with promises I will never keep.”

The accompanying lyric video is an arresting, colorful, hodgepodge of cartoon images, blurred video silhouettes, and vibrant graphics. It perfectly supplements the track and feels like a DIY zine come to life.

Out next month, Flowers for Men channels a sound that Jena calls “sci-fi/folk”; it’s otherworldly, emotionally bare, and lyrically revelatory. The album was co-produced by Jamie Johnson and documents Jena’s journey in undoing the expectations and hierarchies around relationships. The project’s lead single “Barstow,” was named after a town in California’s Mojave Desert, and its cinematic lyricism is beautifully paired with a Jennifer Reeder-directed music video.

Flowers for Men is a continuation of a lifelong love of songwriting that began as a child growing up in Lake Tahoe, which she later continued with her bands The Shoe and Jena Malone and her Bloodstains. Alongside her music, Jena has a storied career in film and television, including lauded performances in Donnie Darko, The Hunger Games, Love Lies Bleeding and many more. Next, Jena takes her acting prowess to the newly announced Duffer Brothers show, The Boroughs, to be released on May 21 on Netflix.
