Ruby James – Voodoo Queen

Ruby James

With a wicked laugh and a Keith Richards-worthy guitar riff, Ruby James kicks open the door to her next chapter with “Voodoo Queen.” The swaggering blues-rock anthem is the first taste of her upcoming album Call It Rock & Roll, arriving August 7 on Mule Kick Records.

Written years ago during a turbulent chapter in James’ life and shortly after the loss of her beloved grandfather — the man she affectionately calls her “man in black” — the person who first sparked her love of music, the song took on new meaning over time. After stepping away from performing and eventually finding herself living in New Orleans, absorbing the spirit and contradictions of the French Quarter, “Voodoo Queen” ultimately found its moment as a rock and roll resurrection.

The song was reimagined in the studio with producer and multi-instrumentalist Kyle Crusham, whose arrangement brought fresh fire into the room.

“In this new chapter of my life in music, I’m finally ready to step fully into my power in a way I wasn’t ready for before,” says James. “Voodoo Queen is about reclaiming your power and your magic, trusting your intuition as your North Star, and refusing to let anyone dim your light. I’m ready to take my crown and step into my queendom. Let’s call it rock and roll.”
