Mitski – Nothing’s About To Happen To Me

Mitski presents her new album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, via Dead Oceans.

Along with the release, Mitski releases the video for “If I Leave.”
The “If I Leave” video, directed by Jared Hogan, is at once stunning, unsettling, and darkly funny. Set in a house breathing with menace and history, each room carries its own traces of the lives and eerie moments it once contained. Mitski and members of her band perform within these spooky spaces with calm indifference, their straight forward presence grounding us even as the rooms around them bristle with unease. The house is the true character here; Mitski and her music are the throughline tying its eras and horrors together.
Nothing’s About To Happen To Me includes the singles “I’ll Change For You” and “Where’s My Phone?”
Nothing’s About to Happen to Me finds Mitski immersing herself in a rich narrative whose main character is a reclusive woman in an unkempt house. Outside of her home, she is a deviant; inside of her home, she is free. Directed by Lexie Alley and edited by Rena Johnson, the “I’ll Change for You” video builds upon this world, zeroing in on the chaotic, untidy Tansy House universe presented in the album’s photos by Alley. Printed frame by frame onto film with hand-drawn marks and subtle unsettling distortions, the footage feels like a roll of film that could be found in the Tansy House: fragile, dilapidated, and probably buried under a pile of books.
Mitski wrote all of the songs and performed all of the vocals on Nothing’s About to Happen to Me. Produced and engineered by Patrick Hyland and mastered by Bob Weston, the album continues the musical through line established with 2023’s The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We, and features live instrumentation by The Land touring band and ensemble arrangements. The orchestra was recorded at Sunset Sound and TTG Studios, arranged and conducted by Drew Erickson, engineered by Michael Harris.
Mitski will present Nothing’s About to Happen to Me around the world, including residencies in select major cities: six nights at The Shed in New York City, five nights at Hollywood High School in Los Angeles, and four nights at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney. Additional stops include Mexico City, Istanbul, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, London, Manila, Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.
