“Happy Girl” is a messy, unfiltered journal entry turned anthem, capturing the turbulence of mental health struggles, the disorientation of losing your identity, and the triumph of reclaiming it. “I wrote Happy Girl when I felt anything but happy,” Mareya shares. “I was in the middle of an identity crisis, and I wasn’t even ‘done’ with feeling crap when I wrote the rejoiced ending! I wrote that part as a kind of manifesto out of that feeling, and you know what? It kind of worked.”
Born in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and now based in Naarm/Melbourne, Mareya is more than a rising star—she is a genre-bending producer, songwriter, guitarist, and vocalist pioneering a new lane of empowered, mental health–inspired pop.
