Elder Island – Snapshot

Elder Island by Nic Kane

Landing off the back of sold-out London and Bristol dates, ‘Snapshot’ captures a defining emotional moment within the forthcoming record. Following the Crack and Mixmag-supported ‘Pink Lemon’, which leaned into sun-drenched soul-pop, ‘Snapshot’ pivots toward something more rhythmically urgent and marks the band’s first true love song.

Built around tightly interlocking percussion and a driving low-end pulse, the track unfolds through layered rhythmic repetition and gradual, emotive lifts. Looping motifs, subtly recalling minimalist pioneer Steve Reich, create a restless momentum, while airy synths and a swelling string arrangement add warmth and depth. The tension between frantic rhythmic propulsion and soft, emotionally direct lyricism gives ‘Snapshot’ its core pull: club-focused yet intimate, kinetic yet tender.

For vocalist Katy Sargent, the song represents a shift in approach. Having previously shied away from writing directly about love, often obscuring meaning behind layered themes, she embraced a newfound simplicity during the album sessions. Guided by the mantra “keep it simple”, ‘Snapshot’ allowed space for emotional clarity rather than concealment, leaning into devotion without overcomplication.

The single also arrives with its own visual world. Directed by Bristol photographic lab Photographique, the video unfolds within the pages of a photo album; stretching a fleeting moment into something timeless. Shot in rolling hills and an abandoned home outside the city, it reflects on memory, family and the fragile permanence of photographs.

Elder Island add:

“We wanted Snapshot to feel like a journey. In contrast to Pink Lemon’s classic pop structure we created a series of emotive builds and breaks that flow through the song. Key players are the rhythm and the strings, it was our first time using a string quartet (if remotely) which was a joy. There’s a frantic energy to the track though the music and lyrics are soft and emotional which creates an interesting juxtaposition. Snapshot was one of the last tracks we wrote for the album, so it emerged from a point where the sessions had reached a flow state”.

‘Snapshot’ is the next single from Hello Baby, Okay, a record that marks a conscious reframing of the trio’s creative process. Where 2021’s Swimming Static was meticulously layered and studio-focused, the new album emerged from free-flowing jam sessions, reconnecting the band with spontaneity and the kinetic energy of their live performances. Rooted in 90s club culture and threaded with lilting funk-pop guitars and driving rhythms, the ten-track record balances hedonism and devotion, a tension that ‘Snapshot’ captures in miniature.

With momentum building towards the album (8th May) and sold out dates at London’s Oslo and Bristol’s Strange Brew later this month, ‘Snapshot’ finds Elder Island at their most open yet: distilling urgency and devotion into a track that feels equally at home on the dancefloor and in quiet reflection.

*Hello Baby Okay will also come with its own limited ‘Snapshot’ edition vinyl. Available exclusively via the Elder Island official store and Bandcamp, the release includes a signed insert & photo wallet with a selection of stickers and photos taken by the band during the making of ‘Hello Baby Okay’
