ROREY – Hurts Me To Hate You

ROREY

New York based singer-songwriter and musician ROREY releases “Hurts Me To Hate You” from her Dysphoria EP.

ROREY confides, “I wrote Hurts Me To Hate You at 21, when I realized the anger I held toward my mother wasn’t protecting me — it was only keeping me stuck in a cycle of pain. And it hurt me to hate her. Even though she may never fully understand me, I still wanted her in my life. And that meant accepting her for who she is, and what she’s capable of giving. It was a profound turning point for me in embracing radical acceptance. At the end of the day, I am responsible for my emotions – not my mother. You can’t control other people. It has taken me years to get there.”

Singing candidly about topics like her bipolar diagnosis and her relationship with her mother, Dysphoria is a raw and resonant exploration of mental health, identity, and survival — with songs for crying in your bed or dancing alone in your room.

Known for her emotionally raw and sonically immersive style, ROREY doesn’t shy away from discomfort — she leans into it, inviting listeners into her inner world with fearless vulnerability.

Written during the pandemic when ROREY was just 21 and grappling with a manic episode, Dysphoria is a vulnerable, brave, and soft place to land. Co-produced by longtime friend and collaborator Scott Effman, the album offers not only a window into ROREY’s experience but a mirror for anyone who’s ever felt overwhelmed by their own mind.

ROREY was born in Manhattan and raised bicoastally between Los Angeles and New York City. She began playing guitar at six and composed her first song by ten. A self-taught pianist, ROREY possesses an intuitive grasp of melodic composition, which empowers her to write and co-produce every track she releases. Her innate understanding of sound, paired with her early affinity for prose and nascent lyricism, allows her music to live in the space between youthful rawness and reflective reverie.

In 2019, ROREY left The New School in NYC to pursue her dream of living off her art. She returned to Los Angeles and released her debut single, “Predictable,” in 2021. Since then, she has carved out a distinct lane with brutally honest lyrics, hypnotic hooks, and a signature emotional depth that makes listeners feel seen.

Now 26, ROREY is known for her genre-bending sound and introspective storytelling. “Each one of my songs has an element of introspection — I’m always asking myself a question,” she says. “My music is about relationships with ourselves and others. It’s about self-deviance, self-discovery, and being radically honest, even when it hurts.”

Dysphoria,

Diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2021, ROREY turned to songwriting as her greatest confidant and catharsis. Her upcoming sophomore EP, Dysphoria, was written during a mixed manic episode at the age of 21, in the thick of the pandemic, as a way to make sense of the chaos in her mind. Co-produced by longtime friend and collaborator Scott Effman, the project explores her cognitive dissonance through haunting melodies, ethereal vocals, and swirls of hypnotic instrumentals.

ROREY draws inspiration from everything — even pulling lyrics from text conversations. Though the only musician in her family, she grew up surrounded by sound, thanks to her Father’s love for Santana, Pink Floyd, and Jethro Tull.
