Lucrecia Dalt – caes (Feat. Camille Mandoki)

Lucrecia Dalt presents “caes (Feat. Camille Mandoki),” the latest single from her anticipated new album, A Danger to Ourselves, out September 5th on RVNG Intl.

Following “cosa rara (ft. david sylvian)” and “divina,” “caes” thunders through with unflinching intensity as Dalt’s commanding vocal presence confronts listeners with raw immediacy. Lead chorus vocals by Mexican singer and sound artist Camille Mandoki deepen the arrangement, cutting through the sonic landscape with resolute clarity. Stark, percussive elements reverberate with deliberate force. Percussionist Alex Lazaro, Dalt’s collaborator on 2023’s ¡Ay!, doesn’t merely keep time; he fractures the groove, creating pockets of tension.

“Musically, I wanted to hint at a slowed-down and diluted dembow, but with a melodic energy that felt ancient. Poetically, it’s an amalgamation of various references; it examines the legacy of one’s life through the lens of tragedy. Ana Mendieta and Evelyn McHale were specific figures, in my mind.” explains Dalt. “It features my dear friend Camille who has a unique voice that is rare to hear nowadays. I love it when female voices carry a certain depth, and they don’t spend too much time in the upper, breathy register.”

The video for “caes” was filmed between the Southwestern US, where Dalt relocated in 2023 after living for years in Berlin, and Mexico City, where Camille calls home and is an active member of the city’s music scene with her own music and as member of Amor Muere alongside Mabe Fratti, Concepción Huerta, and Gibrana Cervantes. On the video, Dalt offers a simple (or perhaps not at all) statement: “It is in the act of surrendering oneself to falling that the total, the sublime, enters?”
