Marina Fleming – Groupies In The Age of Consent
Indie-rock artist Marina Fleming has released her new album, Groupies in the Age of Consent, on which she was the sole artist, writer, and producer. Composed of nine reflective and sonically hypnotic tracks, this body of work takes audiences to a different reality within the course of its story. Each song’s lyrics are inspired by Fleming’s own coming of age, sung gently over a bed of guitar and synthesizer riffs.
With the dream instrumental team, made up of Lomie Blum (bass), Kai Schaffer (bass, drums, additional drum production), Garrett Crusan (drums), Max Vanderleeden (electric guitar), Navv Malavia (electric guitar, bass, drums), and Rowen Aster (synth), Marina Fleming’s Groupies in the Age of Consent is a deeply introspective album that explores her place as a young woman navigating the music industry, and the world at large. Inspired by her time at Bennington College, both inside and outside of the classroom, Fleming crafted an album that blends dreamy indie rock with raw, personal lyricism, drawing listeners into a world that is both alluring and unsettling. “Just Another Night” captures the intoxicating, yet hollow, allure of the LA lifestyle, with lyrics like, “Girls in the crowd wanna dance with you / And guys at the bar wanna buy you booze…But it’s just another night…to make you feel better ‘bout the rest of your life.” In “The Band,” she grapples with the tension between chasing dreams and defying expectations, singing, “You told me these were the easy days… I know I’m not the kinda girl you raised…You think I’m aimless / My life is shameless / I wanna start a band / Write songs and get famous.” Other tracks, like “Pills” and “Kiss,” delve into the pain of watching someone you love move on without you, while “Eyes Wide Shut,” “Spring,” “Harvey,” “Shadows,” and “Girls at the Party” continue the album’s exploration of longing, identity, and self-exploration. Each track is laced with vulnerability and relatability, pulling listeners into Fleming’s world, a place where emotions are laid bare, and every lyric feels like a personal confession.
