The 40th Anniversary of Canadian Music Week has already begun. It includes over 100 acts at 20 venues.

Canadian Music Week is Canada’s leading annual entertainment event dedicated to the expression and growth of the country’s music, media and entertainment industries. Combining multifaceted information-intensive conferences; a trade exposition; awards shows and the nation’s largest new music festival.

The 40th Anniversary concert featuring Crown Lands, BRKN Love, and Sam Coffey and the Iron Lungs on Tuesday, June 7 at The Phoenix Concert Theatre. On Friday, a FEMMUSIC favorite Bif Naked will perform. FEMMUSIC has interviewed her before:

Other acts to see this year:

Bad Skin – This Montreal band recently released their single “Completely Insane.” They will be touring the UK prior to their EP release in July.  #badskinband

Equal – No matter your ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, race or religion, you deserve to be treated equally- that’s what musical duo EQUAL believe.

Saleen Nolan and Chelsea Nolan, 20 and 22 years old, believe that having a platform means using it to do good – and what a platform it has truly become.  #thebandequal

Housewife – Housewife is Brighid Fry (she/her) and Pascale Padilla (they/she), two queer Toronto-based songwriters who are only just getting started at 19 and 20 years old. They released “Patrick Bateman” in May. #housewife_band

King of Foxes – King of Foxes is the stage name of indie-alternative artist, Olivia Street. Delivered in a voice equal parts fierce and fragile, Street’s lyrics are poetic and evocative, deftly interwoven with seeing-eye hooks and a cogent understanding of songcraft. Think HAIM meets Waxahatchee with a touch of Liz Phair. Since launching King of Foxes, she has independently released two critically acclaimed albums. #kingoffoxesband

Neon Bloom – Neon Bloom’s Jen Simpson [vocals], Fred Yurichuk [bass], Simon Chow [guitar/keys], and Chris Romano [drums]. They released the Still Life EP, and their latest single is “A Bullet In Tomorrow.” #neonbloommusic

Velours – velours is an alt. pop singer/songwriter full of emotion, carried by a velvet voice. Her desire to explore feeling through music, while not taking things too seriously, resonates with her audience. She released her first EP Identity September 2020. #veloursartist

Allydice  – Mississauga, Ontario –  This hip-hop group of twin sisters Kayla & Kayle Allydice graduated in 2018 with degrees in Criminology. Their single “White Tears” is a call to action in the age of Black Lives Matter. They are working on their first EP. https://www.instagram.com/allydicetwinz/

Dope Earth Alien – Toronto, Ontario – Kenisha Humber is Dope Earth Alien (DEA). DEA advocates for the representation of Black femininity in its multitudes, especially for the low-key and quirky girls who continue to seek mainstream visibility. Flara K – Montreal, Quebec – This duo released their sophomore EP Anxious, Irrational, Fashionable in 2020. They have soul infused pop with addictive vocals. https://flarak.com/

Nova Rose – Montreal, Quebec – Nova Rose is an indie pop artist who has been releasing singles galore recently including “Need Me”, “G.L.I.T.R.”, and “Cause You Make Me Feel Like.” http://bynovarose.com/

Odreii – Montreal, Quebec – Audrey Laurencelle is Odreii. She has played SXSW and opened for Wyclef Jean. The single from her debut album Sweating Gold is called “Heat.” https://www.odreii.com/

Shawnee –  Edmonton, Alberta – Shawnee Kish is a Canadian Mohawk Two Spirit singer/songwriter. She is driven to help her Indigenous community at the same time affirming her identity. Her songs include “Warrior Heart”, “Mirror Me”, and “Got It Bad.” https://www.instagram.com/shawneekish/

Still Eighteen – Toronto, Ontario –  Still Eighteen includes former Platinum Blonde and Trixie Goes Hollywood frontman, Joey, as the lead vocalist and guitarist, alongside his wife Karen on drums and their daughter Samantha on bass and vocals. Still Eighteen was fortunate to be able to finish their European tour just before the borders closed in March 2020. They performed in Italy, Switzerland, and Austria, headlining at some awesome venues! Since the pandemic, the band has been actively writing and recording new music and also had the exciting opportunity to be actors in a major Hollywood movie, (“Shotgun Wedding”) acting alongside Jennifer Lopez, Josh Duhamel, Lenny Kravitz, Cheech Marin & more! They have released 2 singles based on the pandemic: “I’m Finding It Hard to Believe in Something”, and “Tomorrow.” https://stilleighteen.com/

The Manic Boys and Girls Club – Toronto, Ontario – Siblings Bela and Fernando Ferreira are The Manic Boys and Girls Club (MBG Club). They play indie rock and their EP is layered with lush synthesizers with overdriven guitars. https://www.facebook.com/themanicboysandgirlsclub

Velours – Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – velours released her EP Identity last year. She has worked with Ryan Stewart and was nominated for 2 Saskatchwan Music Awards. https://www.veloursartist.com/
