10 Artists to See at Melbourne Music Week

Paving the way for the much-anticipated return of live music, MMW will see over 300 acts return to the stage for headline gigs, day parties, industry talks, DJ sets, live film scores, and much much more. From the Label showcases to the Live Music Safaris MMW is setting the stage. The Carlton International Jazz Festival will take place on December 4-5, and The Music Victoria Awards will take place on December 8.

There are many familiar names here from Banofee, Alice Skye, Elle Shimada, Zig Zag and more. Here are a few of our favorite picks for the festival.

Espresso Depresso

Espresso Depresso – Aptly named for their crippling coffee addiction and heavy heart, Espresso Depresso emerges from small-town Yackandandah into the Aussie music scene with the new track “Self Control.” Part of the Push Records Presents.


Georgia Maq

Georgia Maq – Since her signing we’ve been waiting for more music and live performances from Georgia Maq @goldsoundz

It Thing

It Thing – Formed in Hobart’s beloved Brisbane Hotel beer garden in early 2019 over a thirst for classic punk rock and not much else to do.  @itthingband


Jazz – Jazz is a host at PBS 106.7FM. She is also an emerging artist in the electronic scene. @rasminejose

Karadajala Kirridarra

Kardajala Kirridarra – Kardajala Kirridarra translates to ‘Sandhill Women.’ Kardajala is the name of the mysterious bush woman from the sandhills behind the community of Malinja, NT. @kardajala_kirridarra

Lupa J

Lupa J – Lupa J is a multi-discliplinary artist. She is a producer, songwriter, video editor, and more. Her style is an industrial mix of dance and goth. @lupa.j


M8riarchy – m8riarchy is a singer, songwriter, producer, and sound engineer based in Melbourne. @m8riarchy

Pinch Points

PINCH POINTS – Melbourne four-piece Pinch Points have signed with Mistletone Records (Australia/New Zealand) and Exploding in Sound (USA) for their new album Process, to be released on March 18, 2022. @pinchpointsband


Sophiya – Sophiya has already been booked for Yours and Owls 2022. She’s part of the Writing on the Wall at MMW. @sophiyamusic

Tiana Khasi

Tiana Khasi – Future-Soul artist Tiana Khasi came to scene with her debut EP Maghalaya in 2019. @tianakhasi

Pinch Points

Melbourne four-piece Pinch Points have signed with Mistletone Records (Australia/New Zealand) and Exploding in Sound (USA) for their new album Process, to be released on March 18, 2022. The band’s new single, “Reasons to be Anxious” will be released as a 7” single with “Boy” on the B-side.

Look for Pinch Points at December’s Melbourne Music Week.

Loose Tooth – Melbourne’s Loose Tooth is a 3 piece indie-pop band known for “Keep On” on MILK! Records –

Memphis LK – Recently signed to Dot Dash is a producer, dj, vocalist and artist

Naretha Williams – Williams is a First Nations experimental artist

Phia – Founder of Melbourne Indie Voices this artist combines looping, Africian kalimba and more to a unique experience

Shrimpwitch – Kim Prawn and Georgi Goonsac bring the guitar and drum punk project to life.

Stonefield – This band of 4 sisters has toured with Fleetwood Mac and many more.

Zoe Badwi – Since 2008 this pop star has made news from her song “Release Me”

Melbourne Music Week, MMW returns with 3000 artists over a week period. Once again it has artists who have been on our radar. Here are 15 to pay attention to
Nadia Rose – Rose is a UK rapper who released Highly Flammable last year.
Jade Zoe – Zoe is a Melbourne based Dj & Producer.
Gretta Ray – Gretta Ray is a Melbourne based singer-songwriter who has begun to make waves worldwide. Her latest EP is Here and Now.
Anomie – Anomie is a Sydney DJ & Producer
Dianas – This Melbourne 3 piece has a fun pop punk style.
Elle Shimada – Elle Shimada is a 3 piece of electropop that combines harmonies with music.
Emah Fox – Fox is an electronic pop musician from Melbourne. The story is much better than that…
Jen Cloher – Jen Cloher is signed to Courtney Barnett’s Milk Records and her self-titled album is out now.
Lazertits – Lazertits is a pop driven activist band.
Leah Senior – Leah Senoir is a Melbourne based folk artist
Nai Palm – Nai Palm is the singer for Hiatus Kaiyote who has now released her solo project, Needle Paw.
Penny Ikinger – Penny Ikinger is a solo guitarist who wants to rip the world apart. An artist to keep an eye on.
Ruby Fields – Ruby Fields is a rock band from NSW led by Ruby Fields.
Rose Riebl – Rose Riebl is a minimalist singer-songwriter.
RVG – RVG is a Melbourne rock band who released their debut album A Quality of Mercy last year. They are slowing getting worldwide attention.

Who To See at Melbourne Music Week
November 11-19, 2016 – Melbourne, Victoria, Australia
Melbourne Music Week is the SXSW of Australia. It has programs on film, music and discussion. It includes big headline names of Dorsal Fins, Elliphant, Julia Stone (of Angus & Julia Stone), Mama Kin, Oh Pep!, Zola Jesus and more.
Elizabeth Rose – Elizabeth Rose is an Australian singer-songwriter. Her debut album is Intra.
EN.V – EN.V is an experimental artist. Her cassette, UR Future is Bright, calls for attention.
Friendships – Nic Brown & Misha Grace are Friendships. They are doing a dj set during MMW but they are known for growling doom rock. They released Nullarbor 1988­1989 in September.
GL – Graeme Pogson & Ella Thompson are GL, an Australian electronic group. They released Touch earlier this year.
Linying – Nettwerk artist Linying is from Singapore and has been getting worldwide attention. She released Paris 12 earlier this year.
Lotus Moonchild – Lotus Moonchild is an Australian dj and producer. She has worked with Tokimonstra before.
Nai Palm – This is the lead singer of Hiatus Kaiyote doing a solo set. Palm’s vocals are unmistakable.
NonoTak – Noemi Schipfer  & Takami Nakamoto are Nonotak. They met in Asia and have been making beats in Europe.
Pillow Pro – Sophie & Christobel are this Australian EDM band.
Suss Cunts – This is a Melbourne based 3 piece punk band.
Teeth & Tongue – This Melbourne pop band released Give Up on Your Health in September. The band is led by Jess Cornelius’ dark vocals.
Young Magic – Melati & Issac make up this dreampop band. They released Still Life earlier this year.
